Wisconsin Area Codes running out of numbers............

Post by pojo »

Report: Area codes 715, 920 running out of numbers

The Associated Press

MADISON — Wisconsin will need two new area codes by 2010.

The 715 and 920 area codes are expected to run out of numbers in the next few years, according to a new report from the government contractor who oversees the nation’s area code planning.

The 715 area code covers central and northern Wisconsin including Eau Claire, Wausau and Marinette. The 920 area code runs from Fort Atkinson to Washington Island.

State regulators said they will begin holding hearings this fall on how to create the new area codes, but no dates have been set and no action is expected for at least a couple years.

It would be the first time in about a decade that Wisconsin added an area code.

The 920 area code was created in 1997, when it broke off from 414. Then 414 split again in 2000. Milwaukee kept the old area code, while the region from Pleasant Prairie to Lake Geneva to Port Washington became 262.

The 262 and 414 area codes now have enough numbers to last until 2018 and 2025, according to NeuStar, the Sterling, Va., company hired by the Federal Communications Commission to oversee area code planning.

The 608 area code, which covers south-central Wisconsin including Madison, should have enough numbers until 2015.

But the 920 area code may run out of numbers by 2010, and the 715 area code is most pressed, with only enough numbers for the next two years, NeuStar said.

“You don’t normally think of northern Wisconsin as being a hotbed of telephone competition,” said Gary Evenson, administrator of the state Public Service Commission’s telecommunications division. “But in cities like Eau Claire and Superior, wireless providers are also using up numbers.”

Demand for cell phones, fax lines and phone lines for computers boomed in the late 1990s, and some reports predicted the nation could run out of area codes within a decade. Each area code includes 792 exchanges.

The FCC changed its system for allocating phone numbers in 2000 to address the problem. The agency began issuing phone numbers in 1,000-number increments instead of 10,000 as it had in the past. Before that, a carrier with only 100 customers could have held 9,900 numbers that were not available to others.

Number portability — or people’s ability to keep their phone number even if they switch carriers — also has helped reduce demand for new numbers, PSC staff said.

CT switched to 2 codes about 10 years ago.

I would have thought they ran out of wire between cabins before numbers

sure did, and now we have some overlapping area codes so we have to dial all 10 digits, even if you are calling your next door neighbor (if your cell phone is programmed with everyone's 7 digit number, start updating that now!)

My cell phone still allows me to dial 7 digits while everyone else I know has to dial 10

When I would go to my grandmothers summer house in ME all you would need to do is dial 4 digits to dial in the same town. That lasted to some point in probably the late 80's or mid 90's. She also had a party line, anyone remember those?

I wonder how many area codes there are just in Dallas?
4 or 5 at least I would guess.

Welcome to life in Atlanta for the past 10 years or so. First they split 404 into 404 and 770 (404 being inside the I-285 perimeter highway, 770 outside) and started 10 digit dialing. A couple of years later they layered the 678 area code on top of both the 404 and 770 areas. Now they are working on another overlay of 470.

The problem, as I understand it, is not that there are really instances of having too many telephones to assign numbers to, but the method in which numbers are assigned. Apparently the phone companies assign numbers in 100 number blocks. If a company wanted to have a three phone lines - 404-555-1234, 404-555-1235 and 404-555-1236 - the phoen company would reserve the entire 404-555-12xx block of numbers in case that customer ever wanted to add additional lines. Even after 5 to 10 years these 100 number blocks were still reserved and never used.

In Massachusetts, the area codes are 413 (for Western Massachusetts' four counties)

508, 774, 978, and 351 for the "495 and MetroWest" areas

781, 339 for the 128 area.

617, 857 to the immediate Boston area
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Life is short, live long!!

I'd rather be a wiseass than a dumbass.

town where I graduated from HS was that way until about 1980 too. 4 digits, or 5, the last number of the exchange, then the 4 digits of actual number

My how times have changed. When I was growing up I lived in the 412 area. Our Exchange was 372. Everyone around us was 372 or 373. Then 856 came in...ah, the good old days. Now I have to dial 10 digits and have 3 different area codes myself, 484, 610 and 215.
