My extended family has always purchased LOTS of fireworks, both big and small, and we shoot them off ourselves. Seriously big, long-lasting display.
The celebrations peaked about 10 years ago when the main event escalated into a bottle rocket fight, complete with my old man on top of the house firing roman candles at whoever ran by. Of course, it was our obligation to return fire.
(Sidenote: The celebrations did cost me one girlfriend... thought she'd surprise me by just dropping by one time. Three bottle rockets went over and under the car as she stepped out. She got back in and never looked back.
)
Although I've seen some really cool professional displays, it's hard to beat the whole family on the deck watching the cousins light the biggest stuff locally available.
(Sidenote rant: It irks me to no end when governmental bodies continue to try to legislate private firework displays out of existence. The wussification of America continues.
)

What about when the Darwinism does its work on the little neighbor kid next door, whose only 'crime' is hanging out in his backyard while he gets taken out by a firework mortar....Skibo wrote:I love fireworks. I enjoy the professional displays, I also have 'distributed' fireworks back in the good old days. I buy on occasion still. I don't feel the need to restrict anyone's right to purchase them either. I consider them a tool of Darwinism.
Edit: Just for the record, this is sort of a "devil's advocate" post, I don't completely agree with laws against fireworks either.

Last year, we lived in the unincorporated area (read "County", no fireworks laws) and my son and his friends brought home lots of fireworks. They were too afraid to light them, I had had a few (?) beers, so I set them off. Long story short, I accidently lit one while it was on it's side instead of standing upright, and, while everyone else was safely out of range, it was aimed right at them. It didn't get anywhere near them, but I bet it gave them a story that will be retold tomorrow! Ah, memories

I prefer to leave it to the pros, but I'm biased... a guy I grew up with was killed in front of his wife, kids and extended family when his private fireworks first misfired then blew up when he tried to deal with the misfire... Darwin at work, some will say flippantly, but it was a damned sad thing....

2 years ago we were invited to a fellow PH's place for their annual 4th pig roast and party. I made the mistake of asking if we should bring some fireworks over...haha he says and then politely says that I think we've got it covered.... Day of the event is beatuiful and the party is great 40 or so famillies and great food on the lake....along about 9 he asks for 8 volunteers to make up 4 teams....Loaders, 2 Movers, and Dumper-outers. He then produced 2 1000lb pallets of 2" mortars and 1 1000lb pallet of "cake" boxes. I was a Loader....there were 8 sets of 24 tube mortars, wew would load 2 strings of 12 in each motar array and the movers would take 2 motar arrays to the dock at a time, while the other movers took away the previous set of motars, inbetween there would be 2 to 4 "cakes" going off. The dumper- outers would then dump out the remains and any UXO and get them ready for the lLoaders....this went on for over an hour..... the Grand finale was 8 cakes and all 8 motar arrays at the same time.....Very impressive!!!!
....Guess where we're going tomorrow.....

I didn't originally throw the Darwin reference, but my apologies to you anyway.
Out of curiosity, was he using "purchased" fireworks, or something "homegrown?" (Feel free not to answer if you would rather not.)
(Even though I love fireworks, I don't create my own.

I love the professional displays w/ and w/o music.
I also have fond memories of when my keet was little gathering with the neighbors in our cul de sac and shooting off $200 worth of barely legal fireworks.... But self fireworking always reminds me of my cousin David.... who when he was 11 decided to toss firecrackers into a 50 gallon drum just to see how cool the sound was.....
too bad there was gas residue in the drum. The burns left him hospitalized for 9 months and scared from the waist to the chin.....
The best fireworks were in NYC...in 1976! The second best were in the early 80s...after a Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer game. Neil Diamond gave a concert to the explosions. It was magnificant and bone chilling!
Please be careful!!!
