I enjoy the professional display, problem is the yahoos on the beach that decide it would be fun to set them off themselves with no regard to the hundreds of bystanders who have also flocked the beach. Truly a very dangerous place

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do So throw off the bowlines Sail away from the safe harbor Catch the trade winds in your sails Explore Dream Discover

They were purchased... Mortars, like described a few posts above. I know people joke about Darwin and all, and I understand that, but when it hits close, and it was just a bad accident... Well, sure made me quit making Darwin jokes about fireworks....krusin1 wrote:SGH, that's horrible...SchoolGirlHeart wrote:I prefer to leave it to the pros, but I'm biased... a guy I grew up with was killed in front of his wife, kids and extended family when his private fireworks first misfired then blew up when he tried to deal with the misfire... Darwin at work, some will say flippantly, but it was a damned sad thing....![]()
I didn't originally throw the Darwin reference, but my apologies to you anyway.
Out of curiosity, was he using "purchased" fireworks, or something "homegrown?" (Feel free not to answer if you would rather not.)
(Even though I love fireworks, I don't create my own.)
I still like fireworks, but keep it to professional displays.
Carry on as you know they would want you to do. ~~JB, dedication to Tim Russert

I've been on the receiving end of watching amateurs set off their own fireworks when something went wrong and the fireworks came shooting in our direction, sending sparks under cars, into tents (we were camping, minding our own business), etc. So I'm another one that doesn't fly with the Darwin jokes.
I'll stick with going down to the park by my grandparents' house and watching the Jones Beach show in the distance.

Back when we lived in Texas, Mrs z's mom lived on a lake about a half hour away. We used to set off rather elaborate displays from the end of the dock, and had lots of sparklers and roman candles for the keets.
Now we can see the Universal displays from our back yard every night, and the Seaworld and Disney holiday displays from the front yard. So we watch the professional displays now, but I miss getting to blow things up for myself!
