Ceremony pays tribute to Danelo
Former Trojans kicker, who died in January, is remembered before game against Idaho.
By Gary Klein, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
September 2, 2007
USC paid tribute to the late Mario Danelo in a pregame ceremony and also after the Trojans' first touchdown in their 38-10victory over Idaho on Saturday night at the Coliseum.
Danelo, a record-setting kicker for the Trojans in 2005 and 2006, would have been a senior this season. He died in January from a fall from a cliff near his home in San Pedro.

Before the game, USC players lined up on the goal line at the west end of the Coliseum and turned their gaze to the video boards at the peristyle end to join the crowd in watching a montage of video clips and photographs of Danelo.
Coach Pete Carroll and Athletic Director Mike Garrett stood with Danelo family members at midfield for the presentation of Danelo's No. 19 jersey.
After Stafon Johnson rushed for a touchdown with 8 minutes 52 seconds left in the first quarter, the Trojans' extra-point unit ran onto the field and lined up for the kick, but kicker David Buehler remained on the sideline in tribute to Danelo.
I would have hated to be either team playing them this particular weekend! Too emotional....

Well ECU played a really good game. I was in tears during the pre-show. On the happy side...my Hokie only had to pay $50 to get into the game.PackPhanGirl wrote:Tequila Revenge wrote:

Yeah, we've got a lot of work to do, especially on defense and special teams. FL and GA are gonna be tough this year. I would hate to think we would be playing SC for the 3rd spot in the East. Only time will tell.dawgfan wrote:Did not happen, I believe the Dawgs looked more like a complete team than I have seen in a few years. Richt giving up the OC job to Bobo showed last night that it was a smart move. National Champions we are not yet but Volunteers, Gators & Tigers(Auburn) better be prepared.

Well, our coach definately did NOT trash talk the Pac 10. I have at times before, but I've never heard Fulmer do it. I will hesitate to say anything else about them now after last night. Your atheletes looked stronger and faster than ours, which really surprised me. 1 and 4 run like freakin' cheetas. Usually, we only see that kind of speed in the SEC. Hats off to a heck of a game and good luck against USC. I will be pulling for you.Brown Eyed Girl wrote:Bob Roberts wrote:Wow, its finally here! Hearing the College Gameday theme song is pure bliss. Well, FWIW, I certainly didn't mean that as a slam on Montana as I don't know much of anything--good or bad--about their programs. (I actually follow DII closer than I do 1-AA, or whatever they're calling it these days.) I was just poking fun at our resident Aggie. (And keep in mind my post was written pre-Appalachian State.RinglingRingling wrote:'scuse me, but the two Montana schools have made more appearances in championship games in the last 10 years than the Huskers...Big Red Parrothead wrote:No offense, but I don't think playing I-AA Montana State qualifies as THE game of anything.![]()

and last year UofMT lost to Appalachin State in the semi-finals on their way to the championship.
But your point opens up a whoooooole different discussion about the merits of a college football playoff, so we're really talking apples and oranges anyway. In the time frame you mentioned, Montana has three championship game appearances (one win, two losses) to Nebraska's two (one win, one loss). However if 1-A had a playoff, I think I could make a pretty strong case that the 1999 team, which finished #3, could well have made the title game. Likewise, in 2001 I think Oregon was probably more deserving of the title shot than Neraska. But because of no playoff system, neither team had the luxury of a shot that Montana (or any other 1-AA team in the playoffs) had.
But we'll save the bowls vs. playoffs debate for late November.

Nah, just a wild hunch. In the back of my mind, I just think Tebow's been so overhyped, that he's almost set up for failure through no fault of his own. Everyone expects him to be the golden boy and, if he's not, he's due to fall.Dr.Corona wrote:Big Red Parrothead wrote:I've gone back and forth on this one, and I'm ready to pull the trigger on my first upset special of the season:
Oklahoma State goes between the hedges and pulls the upset over Georgia.
UGA has too much to replace to expect their defense to be stellar this early in the year. And OSU's defense has nowhere to go but up after last year. So I think the game gets into a shootout, and OSU has the better offense. Pokes win 31-28.
Two other predictions off the top of my head.
1. USC does not go undefeated this year.
2. By week 7, Tim Tebow will no longer be starting at QB for Florida.![]()
Injury ???
Basically, I looked at UF's schedule after next week -- Tennessee, @Ole Miss, Auburn and @LSU. Most important, they have a bye week after that stretch. I expect UF to have their hands full with UT, AU and LSU. If they lose more than one those games, there will be a lot of heat to go to the #2 guy. If you're going to make a move, what better time than with a bye week before having to go @ Kentucky and then vs. Georgia?
Like I said--no insider knowledge or anything like that, just a hunch. And you saw how well that worked out for my OSU vs. Georgia pick.

I try to dislike Tebow but I don't expect him to be yanked. Especially with all the experience from last year (champsionship that he was a big part of)and granted I know last week's opponent was a scrub but he still looked flawless. The man is a beast. Just ask OSU. They had 40+ days to prepare and still could not stop him.
I wish he were FSU's qb.
Weatherford looked a little "Rixesque" at the end of tonight's game.
Still we had a shot and if that replay at the end would have been called right perhaps one more shot for the endzone. Oh well still a great game.
