I s'pose I'd consider it trial-and-error. With emphasis on the error.
I have always learned more from the errors than the successes.

At my age, I am satisfied with who I am so I wouldn't change a thing, even the mistakes.
My biggest "mistake" turns 10 years old in just a few weeks.

:o :o she got older while I haven't seen her????

it's been?? three years?
Yep. :( :(

I wont look back at 40. Its a waste of time, you play the hand your delt. The woulda shoulda couldas aren't gonna help ya.

All I know is that, if they are happy, if they are going to end up having a breakdown because they are alone, is that really better than "settleing"

Friends can be supportive, but telling each other what they "need" or "are supposed to do" is just a little intrusive.
No one twisted your words....this is what YOU said:
But remember this is a 23 year old talking, who is still in school, who has been dating a guy on and off for 5 years, who finally decided that he was ready to get married and that I am the only girl he could ever do it with. Now I find myself in a lot of predicaments. Forgive and forget the past, concentrate on OUR furture, or concentrate on MY future. I love him, a lot. But sometimes I wonder, how I will feel when I am 40 years old.
Let's see...you're 23, in an on again-off again relationship for 5 years...suddenly HE decides he's ready to get married and you freely post that you have concerns (as well you should).
I figured out what I wanted from life by having a relationship. I realized that I will soon be ready for husband and kids
Does anyone else see the contradiction here or is it just me? :-? That is what triggered my concern.

I was in a similar position as you, at the same age. I had the on again off again 7 year relationship. No one could imagine us not married...except for me. For while I might have been able to forgive the past, I couldn't forget it, and because of that I couldn't trust him 100%. I just couldn't go into marriage without that 100% trust, so I walked away. One of the hardest things I'd ever done, but absolutely the right thing to do. While I considered myself worldly and knowledgable, the reality was that life after college was soooo much different...and I didn't know nearly what I thought I did about life. And I have to say, the opportunities and experiences I had after college helped shape me into the person I am today, and I probably wouldnt' have had those opportunities if I'd done what was expected and gotten married.

I don't think the women here are jumping on you, berating you or twisting your words. They've just been down this road before and have learned from their experiences. They are trying to pass their wisdom on to you, so you go into your future with both eyes open and aware.

I have always treasured my friends who are older than me. I have learned so much from them. We don't always agree, but I definitely learn from them, just like they learn from me. It's a great symbiotic relationship. :)

I have to say the same thing only about my son and his friends. I like to occasionally get together with them, and they with me. They do realize that we've been thru some stuff, and not that they always follow our advice they do listen with respect.

And in the same sense I've learned a lot from them as well - heck my son is my hero!!

I AM the older friend.....

I will freely admit to being jaded about quite a few things.....more an occupational hazard than an age thing, but cynicism is part of who I am....

So am I the only one thinking about the scene with Kathy Bates in Fried Green Tomatoes......

[Evelyn is cut off in a parking lot]
Evelyn Couch: Hey! I was waiting for that spot!
Girl #1: Face it, lady, we're younger and faster!
[Evelyn rear-ends the other car six times]
Girl #1: What are you *doing*?
Girl #2: Are you *crazy*?
Evelyn Couch: Face it, girls, I'm older and I have more insurance.

Which is why I said they learned from me (the young'un) too. Pretty much from high school on, most of my friends were older than me, I was always the pup. But I know they gained as much from my knowledge and experiences as I did from theirs....and our experiences together were always priceless.
