I wonder how much Apple spent on advertising in Time to be able to get 4 of the top 12 spots.

I think they are a little generous with apple and their PDA *and* the Iphone. Palm was much more influentual putting the PDA into the mainstream. The Iphone didn't revolutionize the cellular phone industry, it is just another device. I will give apple credit for the macintoy and ipod though. I think IBM deserves honorable mention for bringing the personal computer into the home and business.

Honorable mention maybe.

But it's one thing to have the technology, it's quite another to make it user friendly... which has always been Apple's forte.

While I agree that Palm mainstreamed the PDA, Apple got there first. The article says "Apple paved the way for Palm", which is why it was included in the top 12.

Apple has led the way in many things and gotten little credit for their horrible marketing until the last few years.

Apple was truly first in networking the personal computer and had an easier way than the IBM.

I hated Apple for a long time because they were trying to corner the market instead of going with the flow which made them SO difficult to work with. Much like the old Compaq and Gateway computers which had MANY proprietary parts that would not work with anything but their own brand.

Apple is now an industry leader in innovative thinking. Unfortunately the monopoly of Bill Gates overshadows them still today making it hard to be much more than they are. However, they are successful and are definitely a more forward thinking company than Microsoft.
