From a law enforcement perspective, I have always been a little squeamish over the way they do it......I'm not denying there is a problem, but how about lobbying for funding for ICAC (Internet Crimes Against Children) Units instead of turning it in to Friday night entertainment.
I watched the first couple of shows, but after that, I could never tell if it was a rerun or the new episode......

Although I totally agree with getting true predators off the street, I do not agree with the method that is being used her which is way too close to entrapment.
It's the same argument I have for a roadblock/license check that accidentally nabs a DUI/drug bust or anything else.
To me they should have probable cause without having to "set up" something to catch these people.
If they were going on tips from chat room people OR if they had someone in the chat room that was not trying to "lure" the predator, then fine.

It was quite sad to see this man go through this on TV. I don't remember if he was convicted or not but he did lose his job (or resigned before he was fired).
While I don't deny what these people do is bad (ok, reprehensible), it makes me sad that this guy had to go through such a public humilation. Of course you could argue he put himself in the position to be caught. I just don't know if this stuff is TV appropriate. Then again, happy, feel good stories don't seem to sell as well, do they?
Was he the Rabbi Dave K from Virgina that put his hand in front of the camera when he found out he was caught? If so, they did a follow up on that case a few weeks ago - he was convicted and I think they said he got 5 years in prison.

It hits home for me too - coworker's daughter was molested as well as 4 of my 5 ex SIL's.
I don't agree with this type of "entertainment" - it sickens me. The first time I saw it, and about the only time, my first thought was entrapment.
I think there's a better way for the public to become aware of the problem, such as mentioned by Paige - the ICAC.
However in trying to look for positive in everything I do hope that this show maybe begins to open the eyes of parents to take steps towards internet safety for their children.
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.
I was quite amazed at the number of parents that until the problem with myspace were brought to light....
had no idea whatsoever the information their child has posted in open forum about themselves and personal information they had supplied...
as well as comments posted on their child's myspace page, from complete strangers, except for their communicating online...
that was just this past year...the schools here issued warnings for parents to be aware and on the alert for contacts through myspace....as well as chat rooms
I never thought of this segment of Dateline as entertainment...
When it goes from full to crescent...I move in and out of tune...Everlasting Moon....
Dateline goes after ratings - it's a primetime show although it is a "news" show. Should it's ratings start dropping drastically, just like a sitcom it would be cancelled.
That's why I say it's also an entertainment show.

Yup. Wife's family knew him for years. Never had anything bad to say about him. Yeah, convicted and 5 years sounds about right. Now, how do I edit him out the wedding video...

A lot of parents these days don't even make their children behave in public and even take them to Buffett concerts expecting ME to behave
Being a parent if I'm at a Buffett concert or tailgate and there's children around I try to watch what I say or do - should I not succed and they get offended, well sorry - I tried, get over it, what did you expect from a Buffett show anyway - this ain't the freaking muppets.

Wow. So 5 years is the going rate for a kid-toucher?

I'm sorry to hear that. And yes, I agree that parents need to be very conscious of what there kids do on the computer. For starters (IMO), you need to have the machine in a family room/study and not in the kids rooms and you need to limit their time. The Internet and TV are not babysitters.

According the Perverted Justice website, he was convicted of 2 counts, each with mandatory 5 years. He was tried in a federal court. So yeah, it looks like if found guilty in a federal court, you get a minimum of 5 years.

I wonder how much time he would have received had he kicked a puppy instead.

Hey Mal in Ga they reward people for cruelty to animals, ostrasize parents who discipline their children and screw the average person over for some lame traffic offense.
