Relatives of a teen hit-and-run victim joined with Montgomery County police yesterday in asking the driver to come forward and appealing to the public for help in locating him if he does not.
Esai Lopez, 17, died after being struck by a silver BMW on Tuesday night while crossing a street in Derwood, police said. Witnesses said the driver, thought to be a white male, stopped briefly before fleeing the scene.
"This needs to be solved," said the Rev. Tony Arnold, Lopez's uncle and senior pastor at Gaithersburg Community Church. "This person needs to come forward, confess their wrong and face the consequences."
Police said they had narrowed their search to newer-model four-door cars in the BMW 5 Series, possibly with damage to the hood or windshield. Witnesses saw the vehicle strike Lopez, who was not in a crosswalk or crossing at a corner, at 9:34 p.m. in the northbound lanes of Redland Road, stop briefly and then turn east on Muncaster Mill Road. Lopez was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he died.
"The family needs closure," said Sgt. Meredith Dominick, speaking to reporters at county police headquarters.
Police asked that any witness who has not contacted them call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 301-840-2435, and they urged auto body repair shops to be on the lookout for a BMW with telltale dents.
Lopez's uncle described the teen as bright and college-bound and said he lived with his mother and older brother, Jose, and worked at a McDonald's. Arnold said Lopez watched the Food Network obsessively, took over the grill at family gatherings and dreamed of being a chef.
"We have lost someone who represents the heart and soul of this family," Arnold said. "His middle name was Angel, and he was an angel to us."
On a MySpace page created to memorialize Lopez, one young woman remembered a time he lent her his T-shirt so that she would not get grass stains on her pants. "And i remember when i saw you at McDonalds and I said Esai do u want ur t-shirt back," she wrote, "and you told me that I could either give it back or keep it in memory of you. And Esai that is exactly what I will do."
