Since Chip's link does not work, I am posting the story, since it is an interesting history lesson about a ship confused with the ship that Jimmy's grandfather captained. (It was also posted in another link... but not the entire story by Jefferson Weaver.)

The Chickamauga (originally The Edith) cannons and other parts of it were never found, and the fruit ship that the machinery became was built in about 1867, so unless the Chiquimula was completely built from scratch in Pascagoula in 1912, maybe there is a connection, but I doubt it. According to the article Dutch Harbour posted, they found NO reason to preserve the ship historically.

Confederate cruiser died a long way from her element

One of the most effective warships that ever flew the Confederate flag died an ignominious death, a long way from the Atlantic Ocean where her crew wreaked havoc.

The CSS Chickamauga, whose crew fought at Fort Fisher, captured more than a dozen merchant ships, caused a financial crisis in New York's shipping agencies, and terrorized ports from Bangor, Maine, to Philadelphia sank in the muddy, flood-swollen waters of the Cape Fear River at a place called Indian Wells, sixty miles from the nearest salt water.

Last days of the Confederacy

Commander John Wilkinson knew the end was near, even before word of the defeat at Fort Fisher reached the Navy offices in downtown Wilmington.

Fisher, the "Gibralter of The South," as it was called, had protected the port of Wilmington since 1861. Ships carrying weapons, equipment, food, clothing and other goods from England, Nassau and Bermuda slipped under the guns of Fort Fisher past the largest U.S. naval fleet assembled until World War II. From Wilmington the goods were sent throughout the Confederacy.

By 1864, the war was becoming unacceptably expensive-not just in lives, but in tax dollars. President Abraham Lincoln was under pressure to finish the rebellion, while Confederate President Jefferson Davis was under equal pressure to find new strategies to help the South win its freedom.

Naval strategists in the Confederate government had pushed the idea of commerce raiders since the beginning of the war. With a small, comparatively weak navy, the Confederacy needed to use what resources it had in the most efficient manner. Rather than taking on the U.S. Navy ships-which didn't work well for either side-Confederate strategists wanted to cripple the Union Navy, and thereby the Union government, by hitting them in the wallet.

By striking the unarmed merchant ships of Yankee businesses, cruisers could help drive insurance rates and the cost of goods sky high, making the powerful businessmen of the North push those in Washington for some kind of negotiated peace. The practice almost worked.

The Chickamauga and ships like her cost Northern businessmen the modern equivalent of billions of dollars in lost cargos, ships and insurance settlements. On a side note, the CSS Shenandoah, which targeted U.S.-owned whaling ships, caused such damage to the whaling industry that federal dollars were used to increase and expedite the production of coal oil for lamps and other purposes, laying the groundwork for the modern petroleum industry.

Captured ships and goods were sold at prize auctions in friendly ports, with a portion going to the crew and the captain. As such, cruisers rarely had the recruiting problems suffered by other C.S. Navy ships. They were often manned with aggressive, skilled seamen, many of whom saw America for the first time when their ships came to port here.

But by the late winter of 1864, the South was being worn down. Wilmington was the last port open to the vital blockade runners, and the Federal blockade was closing in tight. More ships were added to the blockading fleet, and in January 1865, a second Union attack against Fort Fisher resulted in the loss of the fort.

Throughout the war, Gen. W.H.C. Whiting and Col. William Lamb set out to make Fort Fisher stronger. When the Federal fleet increased drastically prior to the first invasion, Lamb warned that he needed more skilled artillerists, to man a battery composed of heavy naval cannon at the south end of Fisher. A number of the Chickamauga's men volunteered.

The Chickamauga had made port just before the first invasion, and her guns were used to some effect against the invaders. Armed with long-range cannon, the ship stood in the Cape Fear River behind Fort Fisher. Using the island for cover, the Chickamauga was able to add her long-range cannon to the artillery of the fort and repel the invasion.

The ship was stuck in port due to the increasing blockade, and a shortage of quality coal for the boilers. Capt. John Taylor Wood, a nephew of President Davis and one of the most daring C.S. Naval officers, hoped to use the Chickamauga in an invasion of the Delmarva peninsula, but the plans fell through when word got out through Federal spies.

After successfully betting off the first invasion, Fort Fisher found itself under siege again less than three weeks later. This time, the Federal invaders were successful.

Some of the Chickamauga's crew was still on duty at Fort Fisher, and were captured or killed in the fighting. With Fort Fisher out of the way, federal forces began cautiously moving their way up the Cape Fear toward Wilmington. Spies had overestimated the abilities of the state-built ironclads, the North Carolina and the Raleigh, and had somehow failed to report that the two ironclads were sunk at their moorings, their weapons captured when Fort Fisher fell.

In late February, as Confederate troops evacuated Fort Anderson on the west bank, others on the east bank fought a delaying action near modern-day Monkey Junction, south of Wilmington.

In Wilmington, panic set in.

"True bedlam"

A Wilmington resident who lived through the evacuation in 1865 called it "True bedlam."

Drunken sailors from C.S. Naval ships and blockade runners roistered in the streets. Looting became rampant, and soldiers from the Cape Fear district couldn't begin to keep order.

An organized withdrawal was out of the question, and C.S. Lt. Stanford Gregory said he went about the streets "armed, looking for a way out." The Turkey-area native somehow missed Wilkinson' company being assembled near the Chickamauga, although he did mention in his journal one group of "professional" looking "bluejackets."

With the Cape Fear River full of Federal gunboats as well as obstructions and explosive mines, Wilkinson knew the Chickamauga couldn't make it to sea. The only hope of saving the vessel was to withdraw upstream as far as possible and wait for the right moment to dash downriver.

Even that was a desperate hope, as the Cape Fear's channel was usually three to six feet below the minimum draft needed for an oceangoing ship like the Chickamauga. Just a few miles upstream, the Cape Fear also became too narrow for ships over 100 feet to easily make a turn.

But for once, the Cape Fear was cooperating.

The river was flooding, the first part of a major spring flood that became known as Sherman's Fresh, since the freshet or flood peaked when Gen. William Sherman's Federal Troops reached the Cape Fear at Fayetteville. This flood has been estimated to be the equivalent of the 1945 floods that caused the Cape Fear to spread for miles past its banks.

There was a chance, however slight, that the Chickamauga could make it upstream. If the ship could be safely hidden somewhere, Wilkinson probably hoped to make a dash for the ocean after the Federal riverboats cleared the mines and obstructions of the port.

The Chickamauga slipped from her berth amongst idle blockade runners and overloaded riverboats on the evening of Feb. 20. She turned her bow upstream and began what would become a torturous trip upstream.

It is not known how many sailors the Chickamauga carried upstream; some of her crew at the time was undoubtedly composed of unemployed sailors from the Wilmington port, as well as what rivermen could be convinced to help get the big boat upstream.

If a local river pilot was available, Wilkinson probably would have hired him as well, since the Cape Fear's sandbars, twists and turns were infamous even when the water was low and a captain had a ship designed for the brown water.

For a ship considered one of the fastest ever to slide out of the shipyards in Scotland, and a bluewater crew used to open water, the trip up the Cape Fear must have been a nightmare. Trees six feet or more thick had been uprooted by the floodwaters, and swept downstream. The channel was invisible, since many of the landmarks would have been underwater, and at least some of the trip was made in the dark.

As several of the turns required to navigate the river were sharp and narrow-like the colorfully named "Pull and Be Damned" Point, and the "Devil's Elbow"-sailors had to use winches, blocks, tackles and ropes to manually pull the big ship through some places. Her recently rebuilt gears and steam engines were built for open ocean speed, not the up-and-down, stop-and-go traveling of a flood-swollen river. Just as a sports car can't move through deep sand like a four-wheel-drive truck, the Chickamauga's powerful engines were useless in some places.

Forty miles upstream from Wilmington, and nearly 80 from the Atlantic, One or two days out of Wilmington, she was stuck. The ship grounded on a submerged bank near the place called Indian Wells. While she wasn't crippled, there was no way the ship could make it back downstream under her own power. It's likely her gearing was badly damaged, or Wilkinson knew there was no way he could safely turn her bow downstream for a last-ditch run through Wilmington's port.

It would be the end of the southern cruisers.

Final shots for the Chickamauga

Harry Woods and his wife have lived near East Arcadia for years. A retired farmer and millworker, he'd heard stories of a Confederate ship sunk near his home, less than a mile from the Cape Fear River.

"I'm interested in old things," he said, "but I wasn't sure how to find out about it."

A friend mentioned that the Chickamauga had been scuttled at Indian Wells, a set of springs draining into the Cape Fear. Indians camped there for centuries before white settlers came to Bladen, and descendants of the Cape Fears still live in the area.

The Wells, as it is sometimes called, is located on part of property his wife's family has owned for generations. He said he was always curious about some odd mounds he saw near the river.

"I wondered if that's where they (the Confederates) had put their cannons," he said.

After receiving a metal detector for Christmas, Woods immediately started exploring the old mounds. He found a handful of bullets-58 and .56 caliber lead slugs-near one of the mounds.

Woods is satisfied the rounds are from one of the oddest skirmishes of the War Between the States-a fight between Confederate sailors stuck on land, U.S. Marines and soldiers on the water, and a handful of Federal cavalrymen.

The battle of Indian Wells was insignificant to say the least.

Federal commanders in Wilmington were worried Wilkinson and the Chickamauga crew would roar down the river one night, cannons blazing, and escape to the ocean. The ship was thought to be armed with Brooke rifled cannons, a type of ordinance whose designer was ignored when he offered his idea to his superiors in the U.S. Navy before the war.

A Virginian, John Brooke had resigned from the U.S. Navy when his state seceded, and presented his design to the Confederate Navy. The Southern government accepted the new weapons, and the Brooke rifles proved their worth. With a stronger breech and longer range, the cannon were not only more powerful, but more accurate than the Columbiads and Dahlgrens used by the U.S. Navy. Brookes were ordered to be mounted on the Chickamauga after she was converted from a blockade runner. While production of the Brooke cannon was limited due to supply and manufacturing problems in the Confederacy, the rifled cannon was well-known to Federal commanders by 1865.

The Chickamauga carried only two main cannon, and a handful of smaller pieces, but the Federal officers in Wilmington may have thought the Chickamauga crew had mounted pieces from decommissioned ships for a counterattack against Wilmington.

With a confiscated tugboat filled with musketmen and a cavalry escort on land, a search party began exploring the Cape Fear River, searching for the Chickamauga. The commander of the expedition had orders to avoid a major engagement.

Knowing full well his ship was unsalvageable, Wilkinson had the cannons removed and manhandled up the west bank of the Cape Fear. The sailors turned artillerymen and engineers built a crude gun emplacement that would cover the bend below Indian Wells, where any boats headed upstream would be forced to slow down and creep their way through.

To further complicate matters, the Chickamauga was tied up across the river, with her bow and stern securely fastened to the east and west banks. While she didn't completely block the river, only a vessel with a very shallow draft could get by until she was moved-and sailors armed with muskets would prevent smaller vessels from getting close enough to cut the Chickamauga loose.

It's probable the Federal horsemen spotted the Confederate sailors about the same time that the sailors saw the tugboat headed upstream. As the expedition was supposed to gather intelligence rather than fight, the soldiers spoke to numerous slaves along the way. Several mentioned the presence of a large military ship. One gave them details on the location of the Chickamauga.

Details of the skirmish, if any other than a few lines in the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion have been preserved, are sadly lacking.

A few shots of small arms fire were exchanged, and from Woods' artifacts, at least one bullet probably struck one of the cannon. The bullet has the drastically mushroomed appearance of a bullet that hit solid metal, and is consistent with similar artifacts know to have struck the chase of a big gun.

Springfield muskets, like those carried by the Federal soldiers, fired a .58 caliber, conical bullet. Marines and many cavalrymen carried Spencer repeating rifles which fire a .56 caliber bullet with a slightly blunt nose. Both types of rounds were found at the Chickamauga's gun platform.

The Confederate sailors, depending on when and where they were issued small arms, could have carried anything from Enfield rifles (which fired a round similar to the Yankee Springfields) to shotguns and revolvers. Although such bullets haven't been found in the area, any returning Confederate would have been more spread out-and has likely disappeared as the course of the river has changed slightly since 1865.

With no injuries reported on either side, the Federals withdrew. It wasn't long before the Confederates did the same. They set the ship on fire, opened holes in the hull, and prepared to leave.

Why Wilkinson's command abandoned the post isn't known; it also isn't known how or why the Chickamauga broke away from her moorings and drifted parallel to the shore.

When the Federal troops returned the next day, the Chickamauga was a smoking ruin, burnt to the waterline. Her crew had formed up and marched to Elizabethtown, where they helped wreck the fleet of riverboats there in hopes to blocking the river. They then took another riverboat and headed upstream for Fayetteville and the railroad. The Federal expedition found the remains of the once-proud raider on Feb. 23, 1865.

Wilkinson's command would end up at the Naval yard in Halifax, along with other Confederate sailors from the Charlotte munitions plant, the naval base at Kinston, and other small river stations. Sailors without ships, the men became infantry. Some fought in Virginia and were captured after the Battle of Saylor's Creek, while others were made part of Admiral Raphael Semme's Naval Brigade, which surrendered at Bennett Place in Durham with Gen. Joe Johnston's Confederates a few weeks after Appomattox.

Some mysteries remain

The final fate of the Chickamauga and her artillery can't be confirmed.

Her artillery seems to have disappeared.

Richard Lawrence, a state archaeologist in charge of the Cape Fear delta, said a magnetometer test in the 1970's and examination of the probable gun platform in the 1970's showed no evidence of a large metal object. Had the 4,000 pound cannons been blown up, fragments would have been scattered all over the site. Had they been dumped in the river, the magnetometer likely would have picked the cannon up, since the device can read metallic deposits through several feet of dirt or mud.

Harry Woods says he hopes the site will someday be preserved as an historic landmark. He said he will continue searching the area for more evidence of the Confederate and Union forces that met because of a bluewater ship caught in a brownwater river in Bladen County.

"This type of thing doesn't happen everywhere," Woods said, holding one of the relic bullets. "This is history, and it's right here."

CHIQUIMULA, A SUNKEN DISCOVERY IN SHELL BANK RIVER

The Chiquimula, a wooden sailing vessel once captained by the grandfather of singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, lies at the bottom of a hill below Spanish Fort, Ala.

Originally owned and operated by United Fruit Company, the ship and its two sister ships were based out of Puerto Rico. The Chiquimula serviced the Gulf Coast and Caribbean, taking lumber to Central America to build railroads for large fruit plantations, then bringing fruit back to the United States. The ship only had three masters in its lifetime—an unnamed captain from Puerto Rico, Captain James Buffett and Captain Fred Pribbets.

The Chiquimula was built at the Italian American Shipyard in Pascagoula, MS in 1917. Made of yellow longleaf pine, the ship was 176 feet long with four masts that rose 144 feet above the water. In 1939, the ship was brought to Mobile, AL for repairs. However, United Fruit decided that the cost of repairs exceeded its commercial value, so the ship was scuttled and abandoned in an “elephant graveyard” in Mobile Delta, an area along Bayou Sarah.

Over time salvage seekers stripped the Chiquimula of everything useful. Several years later, the ship broke free of her moorings, and legend has it that she drifted down to the causeway, out of the post-storm fog like a ghost ship. She eventually came to rest in the shallows of what was once the channel of the Shell Bank River, where she deteriorated. In 1953, the ship burned to the waterline, and it remains today at the bottom of Shell Bank River.

Mobile District Regulatory Division received a routine Individual Permit Application from Shell Bank Development, prompting a compliance inspection at a proposed condominium and marina site. During the inspection, they discovered the sunken, historic Chiquimula within the project area. Shell Bank Development was notified that work must be halted until the Alabama Historic Commission was consulted.

Under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, the Corps must consider the effects that any projects authorized, permitted, funded or conducted by the agency may have on historic properties. Under NHPA, historic properties are those that are listed or considered eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

Mobile District archaeologist Joseph Giliberti conducted a preliminary background check to determine the significance of the wreck site. A main focus of the research was to determine if extant or archaeological examples of vessels which meet the same or similar types, size and class of ship as represented by the wreck of the Chiquimula exist, and if so, where and in what condition.

“Based on my research, there are quite a number of sailing vessels of similar construction, size and Barkentine rigged that are still extant,” said Giliberti. “In addition, there are also numerous archaeological examples that are in better shape and are found in environments and conditions that are much more suitable to preservation and archaeological investigation than those found in the waters of the Mobile Bay and Shell Bank River.

“Based on this preliminary research, I concluded that the Chiquimula is not archaeologically significant. I also considered the fact that the ship was scuttled, allowed to deteriorate for years, burned to the waterline, and has since suffered deterioration by natural and cultural forces. These facts, coupled with the extant examples and better archaeological examples lead me to conclude that archaeologically, we have little to gain from the wreck,” said Giliberti.

The Corps partnered with the Maritime Advisory Council (MAC), a group of professionals and interested parties organized and authorized by the Alabama Historical Commission to review and advise on actions concerning the state’s underwater historical assets. MAC determined that the shipwreck does not meet criterion under the NRHP, and is therefore not eligible for the NHRP. “From the Corps’ permit perspective, we have no more issues with the ship, since it is not an “historic property” as defined by law,” Giliberti explained.

MAC and the Alabama Historical Commission have a responsibility beyond the NHPA concerning the ship. This is due in part to the state’s shipwreck laws, and in part to the vessel’s location on state water bottoms. The commission requested that the developer provide a detailed outline of the ship’s story and history as part of the state permit process. The story of the ship was considered to be more important than the actual remains. In addition, MAC requested that an historical marker be placed at or near the location to mark the final resting place of the ship.

• "That old charred wreckage at the east end of the Mobile Bay Causeway, visible at low tide, is the remains of the old 4-masted schooner Chiquimula, that was destroyed by fire of undetermined origin on March 3, 1953.

"We were asked about the wreckage last week and remembered that we once interviewed the former skipper of that old windjammer. He is Capt. James Buffett, who now lives at Pascagoula, Miss. The captain's son, J.D. Buffett Jr., lives at Spring Hill. ... We interviewed the captain on March 3, 1949. ...

"There are many interesting stories about the Chiquimula. Capt. Buffett told us of a voyage in 1925 when he weathered a hurricane between Cuba and the Canary Islands and of another time when he had his wife and two children aboard and was becalmed and ran out of food. ... The voyage when the food ran out, Capt. Buffett told us in 1949, was from the British West Indies to New York. Aboard besides the crew were his wife and 2 children, 'Jimmy' who now lives in Mobile, was seven at the time, and the other child was Patsy, then 4 years old. ...

"If you ask anyone about the Chiquimula, they will no doubt tell you a lot of tales about smuggling and rum-running. Don't believe them.

My Great-great-gandfather was sailing master of the 5 masted ship Preussen out of Hamburg, Germany...... they were in the "Nitrate" trade..... sail from Hamburg to Cape Horn and around to the Chilean Guano caves...... The entire ship was Guano Cargo..... :o :o :o :o :o
