Remembering my first love......

No, not her :-?

The other day I was in Target and mixed in with the other "summer close-outs" was a CD I had seen several times , but never purchased. For some reason, I was compelled to buy it this time (perhaps it is my cheapi-ness and its close out status) Anyway, what I came home with the other day was The Beach Boys- Sounds Of Summer. What this CD is is 30 of my favorite songs by a group that I have seen live more times than any other, except Jimmy.

Little did I know as a young pup in the early seventies, that my first ever rock concert would be one of the very last that Brian Wilson would perform as a Beach Boy I have seen them at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, Summerfest in Milwaukee numerous times, the old Chicago Stadium, with other bands, as the headliner and even as an after thought. The fact is, my continuing fascination with Beach and ocean music whiched evoled into my 30 year love affair with Jimmy, all began innocently on my transitor radio, undr my pillow listening to WLS in Chicago after bedtime, hoping to hear one more time, I Get Around, Fun, Fun, Fun or the one that really hooked me, Barbara Ann

I've seen Jimmy, 20 or 30 times since the mid 70's. From the early 70's to the mid 80's, I saw Mike, Carl, Dennis, Al and the rest probably 15 0r 20 times. I always wondered, who taught who how to strut, Mike L:ove or Mick Jagger? The shows were always incredible, the songs unforgettable, yet somehow....being vinyl, they slipped away.

This CD brought a big part of my past back to life and I love it. If you are not familiar with the body of work that is this band, they are vastly under-rated in my opinion. Considering they went head to head with the Beatles and the Stones, when you look at the chart placement, you'll see something really special happened beginning in 1964 (or so)

PS, I have yet to listen to Kokomo [smilie=puking.gif] and I really wish Marcella was on here

What a nice story, funny that you bring this up Cubbie............I was thinking to myself the other day where my love of the beachy type music came from............I had decided that it was probably in the early 70's when I was fortunate enough to go to Trinidad and fell in love with the steel pan, or maybe the trip to Bermuda, or maybe it was the first time I had just heard Bob Marley on the radio (still remember sitting in my car listening, when I should have been in work :o ) but maybe it goes back a little further to the Beach Boys :) ..........thanks for the reminder. Glad you finally got that CD.....enjoy it :) maybe I'll go to my target and see if they have it too :)

Owned the vinyl and the tape, Cub, and now the CD!!

You can imagine how that California, beach-blonde image and sound was flocked to here in Canada, conjuring up the sounds of Malibu while we had our summers of young love, and long past, into the chilly months of winter! Listened to them evolve from the days of "I Get Around" to the novel and quasi-psychedelic "Good Vibrations". Loved them all this time, in all their incarnations. They have toured here lots over the years, too! :D :D :D

I was just reading this thread as Scott Kirby's song "The Sun Never Came Up" came on while I was listening to WALKING ON THIN ICE. It was written with Roger Guth.

This song is just one of the best!

Scott says:
I was sitting in a hotel bar somewhere near Palm Beach when I heard on television that Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys had died. I wrote most of these lyrics early the next morning in the hotel room.

Verse 1
HEARD SOME BAD NEWS ON THE TUBE LAST NIGHT
WHILE SITTING AT THE HOTEL BAR
I TOOK A DEEP BREATH AND FINISHED MY TEQUILA
AND WENT OUT TO LOOK AT THE STARS
DAWN SEEMED TO COME WITH A STRUGGLE
AS I WALKED THE SIX MILES TO THE BEACH
I SAT MYSELF DOWN ON THE OLD SEA WALL
AND LEARNED ONCE AGAIN WHAT THE SEA COULD TEACH

chorus
AND THE SUN NEVER CAME UP,
AND THE SURF NEVER CAME IN,
AN OLD BEACH BUM ON AN OLD BEACH BLANKET SAID
I'LL NEVER SURF AGAIN
AND THE GIRL FROM CALIFORNIA
WITH HER LIFE IN A SHOPPING CART
SANG GOD ONLY KNOWS TO HER TRANSISTOR RADIO,
AND ROLLED OFF IN THE DARK

verse 2
I SAT THERE WAITING FOR THE TIDE TO TURN
BUT THIS DAY THE WATER LAY LOW
THE BIG GRAY OCEAN LAY FLAT AND STILL
NO WARMTH OF THE SUN, NO EBB AND FLOW
AND THE BOYS WITH THEIR BOARDS IN THE PICKUP TRUCKS
LOOKED AROUND AND SAID MAN WHAT GOES
THE BEACH BUM SAID, BOYS THERE'S NO SURFIN
ALL THE BEACHES ARE CLOSED

chorus

verse 3
THE BOYS PUT THEIR BOARDS IN THE PICKUP TRUCK
AND DROVE OFF IN THE RAIN
THE OLD BEACH BUM PACKED HIS OLD BEACH BLANKET
AND SHUFFLED OFF TO CATCH THE TRAIN
AND THE GIRL FROM CALIFORNIA
WITH HER LIFE IN THE SHOPPING CART
SANG GOD ONLY KNOWS TO HER TRANSISTOR RADIO
AND ROLLED OFF IN THE DARK

chorus

And Clark Weber and Dex Card.

Art Roberts actually died a few years ago, and in learning that, I found these:

Never listened to In My Room too closely before, but since Jimmy's been finishing with that and Tonight I Just Need My Guitar, I'm really enjoying it. Love the harmonies with the Reefers, and the segue into Tonight.

It's my understanding there is a competitor out there... Hernando the Handyman. Or something like that. Think it is a Wal*Mart knockoff.
