None of my close friends get it. When they found out I was driving to Cincy for a concert they all had various levels of disbelief and head shaking. But you know why they're my friends? because they respect how much I like JB. They don't get it, they never will, and I don't try and make 'em.

he's a consummate story-teller who happens to strum a few chords to accompany the tale.

RIGHT ON! It takes alot to be one of us. When i was arranging my tailgate the Buffett virgins coming along didn't understand the need to 36 bags of sand, portable tiki bar or any of what I had going . . . But like magic when 7:30 rolled around and we went to head in for the show most of them began to "get it". They are not there yet but when I drag 2 to Vegas with me it should it home pretty hard.

Hey, it's like Harleys, Jeeps, and a lot of other things...
Just tell 'em "If I have to explain it to you, you wouldn't understand anyway."

1) Why care what other people think. You dont need other people to like what you do to validate anything.
2) Whenever someone says "I am a ____ snob" be it music, beer, wine, etc. just consider them a self important asshat and ignore everything they say. Makes life easier.

I know I really shouldn't defend my music, but they're two of my best friends and I get so tired of hearing it (music is the one thing we differ in, and that isn't even by much).
Not all of my friends get it or are into it the way I am, but I know my "best" friends would never criticize Buffett or chastize me for my passion, because they know that in doing so, they are really criticizing ME.
That said, I don't force Buffett on folks who don't appreciate him.

I've thought of a few things: his marketing and entrepreneurial ability, charity work, longetivity, top selling concerts across the country, etc. but I feel like I need more.
Think it would depend on the audience, some people, no matter the counter discussion will not change their belief, just like in politics or anything else - for those close minded sorts it's not worth the energy, I typically just go "well let's agree to not discuss this anymore - 'cause that's the great thing about music, politics, etc. there are enough opinions, types, etc. that everyone can have a favorite and we don't have to agree, and unless you're just trying to ruin my day, there is no point in going there"
If they are the open minded sorts, then yes you go with his history, humility and growth, that he seems to be a real person that followed his passion and has made some mistakes, owned up, learned from 'em and become very successful. I liked his honesty around becoming more "green" he spouts off as he roars off in his jet, he admitted that was the case and needed to do something about it. Now I don't necessarily agree with his politics...but can appreciate a lot of other things about him -and who can't appreciate the concept of the lifestyle he promotes?
I have educated a few people, with my limited knowledge, and it's opened their eyes - now they don't like his music any better but at least they have started to admire or appreciate the man. The few I've turned on his music is just finding a few songs I thought they'd relate to or appreciate - like my friend who has a masters in math, I sent him the "math suxs" song, he thought it was hilarious!

I ignore it since I was in the middle of another conversation, but it ticked off a nerve. I've decided that simply writing off Buffett Bashing as "They don't 'get it.'" I need a counterargument that doesn't necessarily put other musicians down, but (for lack of a better word) at least attempts to bring Buffett up.

Do you want us to take them out back and beat the crap out of 'em?

How about we come up there, put them in the back of a van playing Buffett and drive them around for a couple of hours?
You said they were music snobs. What kind of music do they like?

I would find out what THEY like.
Then, do your own comparison to the plusses Jimmy provides over these artists. Next time they try to bash you for your tastes, be prepared....and GET 'EM!!!
....and if they are truly "music snobs", hit them with some non-SYKBH. You know, Jimmy's BEST work. If they aren't familiar, get them for ripping something they haven't even listened to...

My girlfriend's sister makes fun of me because I like Jimmy Buffett, but she's a huge Kenny Chesney fan so I don't think too much of it lol.

Why care? Why try to get them to like Buffett? There is enough competition to get tickets as it is!!!!

He shut up real quick. (Before he went LITERALLY crying to my boss).

You really are the king of the subtle comment!

Between my idiot co workers and self-righteous, condecsending relatives, I think they ALL want to have me committed. (Crap, if it gets me away from THEM, I'm all for it).
ANOTHER "subtle" comment I make to them that gets them to shut their collective pie holes ever friggin' time is
"I'M SORRY AS HELL I CAN'T BE PERFECT LIKE

I usually ignore the Buffett bashing my friends make, although they have never questioned me going to concerts. Many times they are impressed of all the places I go, and they are shocked when I explain to them BN. Its to hard for them to understand!!!

I did turn my old boss in to a quasi fan just because I played the music in my office all day, every day......well, unless I was busy making grown men cry....took him to see Peter Mayer last month and now he's a big fan of Peter's as well.
Really, if people have an open mind and get past Cheeseburger/M'ville/WDWGAS they will usually at least like some of it....
if their barnacle brain won't bend.....so be it!
