I was living aboard my sailboat in Puerto Rico, news spread down the dock, we all toasted the King with a rum drink.

1 month shy of my fourth birthday. I was more concerned that my sister was getting her school supplies and I had to wait another year.

I was coming home from work, and actually heard it while on a bus :o I wasn't the biggest Elvis fan, and I remember not understanding all the mania over it-mainly the crazy Elvis sightings that went on for years afterwards.

I understood much of it better just a few years later when John Lennon died.

The summer of '77. I had just graduated high school and was enjoying my time off! I was over at my girlfriends house when the news came over the old radio. I don't remember being a big fan then...but I am now.

Long Live The King!

My new husband and I were driving into Toronto on the 401 when it came on the radio. I was 24. I made him take an exit to a gas station so I could call my mom and tell her. She was a major Elvis fan.

My mom's favorite song...

Are You Lonesome Tonight?
Artist(Band):Elvis Presley

(Words & music: Roy Turk / Lou Handman)

Are you lonesome tonight,
do you miss me tonight?
Are you sorry we drifted apart?
Does your memory stray to a brighter sunny day
When I kissed you and called you sweetheart?
Do the chairs in your parlor seem empty and bare?
Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there?
Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?
Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?

I wonder if you’re lonesome tonight
You know someone said that the world’s a stage
And each must play a part.
Fate had me playing in love you as my sweet heart.
Act one was when we met, I loved you at first glance
You read your line so cleverly and never missed a cue
Then came act two, you seemed to change and you acted strange
And why I’ll never know.
Honey, you lied when you said you loved me
And I had no cause to doubt you.
But I’d rather go on hearing your lies
Than go on living without you.
Now the stage is bare and I’m standing there
With emptiness all around
And if you won’t come back to me
Then they can bring the curtain down.

Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?
Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?

Recorded: 1960/04/03, first released on single

I had just married in July 1977 and have no idea where I was exactly when Elvis died, but had a most memorable summer!. I was probably back for in-service at school. I was more into music by Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Al Green, Crystal Gayle, but still loved Elvis.

I was married and working in a gift shop in Spring when the owner's husband came in and told us. We were shocked.
I remember the radio station doing a tribute that night and crying. :(
