Canadiana requests for Jimmy (Sept. 5/07, Toronto)
The taxpayers of Margaritaville North (Canada) proudly welcome Jimmy Buffett (one of ours, sort of) and the Coral Reefer Band north of the border, Sept. 5 at the Molson (sorry, Landshark) Amphitheatre in Toronto.
Their 5th show in Hogtown since 1984, if our frigid memory serves us correctly.
If it’s not too late, I’d like to submit a couple of Canadiana requests, Jimmy, you son of a son of a Nova Scotia sailor:
• On the eve of another NHL season in the centre of the hockey universe, Boats Drink would be an appropriate order. After all, the legendary Bruin player Derek “Turk” Sanderson, whose bar in Boston inspired the song, is from just down the road in Niagara Falls, Ontario. And, as Jimmy tells us, it is his “only hockey song”. Drop the puck. Let’s go.
• Jimmy played native son Neil Young’s Helpless for the first time anywhere on his last trip here, in June of 2005. How about some Gordon Lightfoot or Joni Mitchell, two Canadian musical giants Bubba listed as major influences on his Live by the Bay recording in 1986?
• Also two years ago, Jimmy brought Prince Edward Island’s Lennie Gallant on stage to perform Mademoiselle Voulez-Vous Danser, written by Lennie and covered by Jimmy. How about Bruce Cockburn (Anything Anytime Anywhere, Someone I Used To Love, Wondering Where the Lions Are and the mesmerizing Pacing the Cage) in ’07, Bubba?
Just a few days until we gather on the shore of Lake Ontario, friends. Rest up. Prepare. Warm welcome and safe travel to our pals crossing borders to get up here.
Phins up.

I'd love to hear Pacing the Cage live. Jimmy has talked about Gordon Lightfoot as a songwriter he respects, there are about ten Lightfoot songs I can think of that I'd love to see him do. Maybe Sundown, or Early Morning Rain.
I think Jimmy could do justice to a few Good Brothers classics too... and Brian, Bruce and Larry seem to have a gap in their touring schedule the first week of September between the River Valley Bluegrass Festival and the Canadian Country Music Awards![hellyeah [smilie=hellyeah.gif]](./images/smilies/hellyeah.gif)

Yes, I'm counting down the days until September 5th! Still debating whether to spend the day at the pre-party hosted by the Maple Reefers, or just hang out in the park (in 2005, we heard the soundcheck version of "Helpless" while eating/drinking on one of the patios . That was alright!)

Jesse WinchesterJesse Winchester is the stage name of musician James Ridout Winchester (born May 17, 1944 in Shreveport, Louisiana)
Winchester was born in Bossier City, Louisiana his father being stationed at Barksdale field. He was raised in both in the country (on farms owned by his parents) and in the city of Memphis, Tennessee, and attended Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, graduating in 1966. After touring Germany and upon receiving his draft notice in 1967, Winchester relocated to Montreal, Quebec. He became a Canadian citizen in 1973, and married his first wife Leslie. After many years in Montreal and subsequent to his divorce, he established his personal studio at Saint Georges de Beauce, Quebec and residing there for some years before moving back to Memphis in 2002. After playing with the Astronautes in Quebec, and while appearing as a solo performer in coffee houses throughout eastern Canada was introduced to Robbie Robertson (then of The Band ) and Albert Grossman (then manager of Bob Dylan). Winchester made his first album, the acclaimed "Jesse Winchester" (which included his classic 'Yankee Lady,' 'Brand New Tennessee Waltz,' and 'Biloxi') with Grossman as his manager and Robertson as producer which was released on the Bearsville label. He subsequently toured in Canada as an opening act for The Band. Jesse took his own road tour of Canada in 1973-74 along with drummer Butch McDade of the subsequently formed Amazing Rhythm Aces He has completed tours of both Australia and Europe as a performing musician.
Winchester has recorded sporadically on several labels since 1970. Unable to tour in the U.S. until the 1977 Carter amnesty, he has become best known for his excellent songwriting, despite being an equally accomplished singer and guitar and Keyboard player.

Jimmy could do that great Canadian masterpiece of a song about the guy
driving
A TRUCKLOAD OF POTATOES FROM PEI
My dad is a Zed from Pt Colborne, Ontario and he had a whole album of crappy novelty songs by the Canadian guy who had the above song.
My dad swore that they were very, very popular.
Would someone let me know if the word "Zed" is a slur. If so, I'll remove it. Growing up in Buffalo, across the river from Canada and having lots of Canadian relatives, "Zed" (the way Canadians used to say the letter "Z") was another slang term for Canadian that was funnier than "Canuck". "Canuck" wasn't very funny seeing as how Vancouver's hockey team adopted it as their name.
I do know that Snyder's hot dogs, Snyder's pepperettes, Maple Leaf Hot Dogs, Bick's pickles, pink Crush soda mousse (cream soda) and Humpty Dumpty vinegar and pickle chips are themselves wonderful pieces of "Canadiana". Those things, in addition to Jimmy's show, are making seeing him on 9/5 pretty tempting.
There are still lots of lawn seats left.

I don't want to live on that kind of island
No, I don't want to swim in a roped off sea.
Too much for me, too much for me
I've got to be where the wind and the water are free.

We STILL pronounce the letter "Z" as Zed. Zed is not a slur. There are Zeds in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick . . . Lebanese background. Schneider's meats have a great reputation, even if I rarely eat meat.Catch&Release wrote:Jimmy could do that great Canadian masterpiece of a song about the guy

Cate,
I went to McGill for a semester on an exchange program. I developed a love for poutine and even liked the poutine from McDonald's.
My paternal grandfather was 100% Lebanese. Kibbe naya (may have spelled that wrong - the "raw" lamb) is one of my all time favorites and Montreal was where I got my first taste of Arabic food.
I will be fishing in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario the first week of Sept and am tempted to drive down to TO to see the show. The 2005 show was awesome, especially Jimmy finishing with Helpless and opening with Diamond as Big as the Ritz.
Concerts over Labor Day week at the CNE were a college tradition.
Best Wishes,
Paul

That guy with the potato song is Stompin' Tom Connors: yes, he was (and is) a huge piece of cheesy Canadiana.... in the best sense!
That song is called Bud the Spud .. can't imagine Jimmy doing it, unless ST joined him. Somehow, I can imagine Mac handling it, especially after hearing his Junk Cars.
Tikitatas, are you coming?
