Carbon monoxide leak in Blacksburg; at least 17 hospitalized

A carbon monoxide leak in Blacksburg has sent at least 17 people to hospitals for treatment. Some of them appear to be in critical condition.

A spokesperson at Montgomery Regional Hospital says of the 17 patients taken there, five have been transferred to other facilities: two to UVA Medical Center and three to Duke University Medical Center. The remaining 12 patients are stable.

Most of the victims are believed to be Virginia Tech students who live in the Collegiate Suites apartment complex. Blacksburg Police say five women had been carried outside from one apartment after being found unresponsive in their beds.

Police say a resident of a nearby apartment called the gas company after getting sick. The responding gas company employee determined there was no gas leak but realized there was a problem and called police.

A Virginia Tech spokesman says president Charles Steger has been to Montgomery Regional Hospital to visit patients there. He is being briefed on the situation and is "concerned."

Look for updates at here and later today on News-7.

You are right sir. The ceremony was at noon today. Not sure when the first call came in this morning for the leak. I was just up there last weekend, and everyone was excited for the start of the new school year and the East Carolina game on the 1st. This really sucks!

Here is the latest.

Investigators pinpoint cause of carbon monoxide leak

Investigators in Blacksburg have pinpointed the cause of the carbon monoxide leak that sent 21 people to area hospitals. Blacksburg police say a faulty valve on a water heater was responsible for the problem.

When authorities arrived, tests indicated a carbon monoxide level of 500 parts per million. An hour later, it was still 200 parts per million. Carbon Monoxide can begin affecting the body at 25 parts per million.

Investigators say the building is now safe and investigators are inside. Residents have not been allowed back inside.

Rumors are going around and I emphasize rumors that 5 of the girls were VT cheerleaders.

I know that apartment complex all too well. My wife lived there as a student in 99'.

They're lucky. I know there are a lot of people in my dorm that keep their door shut. I just checked my room and there's a smoke detector and water sprinkler, but no CO dectector. :-?

Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar

I just got off the phone with my son and he doesn't think he knows anyone. And thankfully he has electric heat!

He went to the memorial dedication today and said is was really nice to have so many people there. Classes start tomorrow.

I hope all the kids are OK...they just don't need this again. :(
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Pinot Noir in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO"

Twelve victims of the carbon monoxide leak in Blacksburg are released from hospital

Officials with Montgomery Regional Hospital report that the remaining twelve patients at that hospital have been sent home. Five more critical patients still remain hospitalized at the University of Virginia Hospital and Duke University Hospital where they were sent earlier today.

Blacksburg police say 21 people were treated at hospitals because of a carbon monoxide leak at Collegiate Suites apartments in Blacksburg.

I just read that and breathed a sigh of releif. The last thing we needed.......

I was recently talking to Renee Cloyd, a friend of mine who lost her daugter in April and she was having an especially hard time now that the students are returning.  I pray for her and all the parents every night. Proof that the pain stays for a long long time.
