Pearl Harbor
Good morning folks
I'll be on Maui at the end of September and the beginning of October
Being a WWII history buff I want to head over and see Pearl Harbor. I'm wondering if anyone has done this before and if they can recommend the best way to get it done
I have the information on the National Park itself, and on flights between the islands. I'm looking for the inside scoop on how to do this best

Get there early, as in line up before they even open if you can. They will hand out timed tickets, your ticket will have the time that you can catch the boat over to the memorial, along with a pre-trip video. You can browse the displays at the musuem while you're waiting for your time. It's much easier to get an early time and browse while waiting, as opposed to getting a ticket for early afternoon and having to come back later.
Well worth it, it's not to be missed. They are quite strict about handbags, purses, camera bags, etc.

The parking lot is a high theft area, so lock your stuff in the trunk, out of sight. Also, don't pay for a tour, if you have a car, I believe the exhibit is free but they accept donations.

Don't know of a tour, but the Memorial is very close to the airport. Cab fare wouldn't be too much, and you can also take a city bus from the airport to Pearl Harbor for just a couple of bucks. Remember that you can't take bags there, so you'll have to have someplace to store any bags or things that you bring for the day.Hooray Beer! wrote:Thanks for the tips folks
We are staying on Maui and I plan on flying over to take the tour
I'll be with my in-laws so it will be a nice escape
Is anyone aware of any tour groups that do the flight, transport to Pear and back to the airport ?
Or is it easy to get from the airport out to Pearl

And if you have to wait an hour or two if you don't get there at the crack of dawn (which you won't if you're flying over from Maui that morning), you can visit the USS Bowfin or USS Missouri (I think) for tours. Other than that, there really isn't much to do in Pearl Harbor area unless you want to go back to Honolulu/Waikiki area.docandjeanie wrote:I did the tour, it was worth it, very moving experience. The timed tickets are important so get there early as already stated.
One word of advice on Southern Oahu (where Honolulu/Pearl Harbor are) in general. It's something like the 11th largest metropolitan area in the country and just like every big city, it has a labyrinth of highways and one way streets and rush hour traffic and such. Have fun though!!!
Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar
If you look in the tour books you will find day trip infomation. However, it may be cheaper to do it yourself. I recently read that inter-island flights are as low as $20 each way pre tax. I just did a random search for R/T on Sept 24 and it is currently $94. Aloha, Hawaiian, and Mesa are 3 of the inter-island airlines. You can probably pick up a rental for the day and that way you can see even more of Oahu then what a tour would give you. The drive around the island is very nice. Peal harbor is definalty worth the trip.
