I don't know much Springsteen...to be honest.
What I hear is best done by Springsteen.
As for Glory Days specifically, I've never learned the words...and I really hate sitting out one song during a Buffett show having to mimic words I don't know and dancing to a song that I really don't enjoy....

It has an upbeat tempo, but the lyrics are depressing as hell, that's why I gave up Springsteen music in college and got into Buffett, Springsteen's songs made me want to kill myself and Buffett's make me want to go to the ocean and have a party....you do the Math. Jimmy has so many great songs that he can't get to in his shows, don't waste valuable concert time covering second rate cheesey songs. People go to a Buffett concert for a lot of reasons but he isn't really famous for his vocal talents, don't get me wrong he sings his songs great, but he doesn't have a magical voice that you just want to hear him sing any song with that voice like Elvis or Neil Diamond.

While I will agree with you on the latter, I did like it when he did "Glory Days" at the Philly concert. That said.. doing out of that geographical context, is silly. He was on that night, but I have not heard him do it as well since.

I agree with you. If it was Philly, MSG, or Camden, then I can see him playing it because of where he is at.

Hearing/seeing it played in Philly .... along with the huge fireworks show at the end....along with some great friends .... was pretty awesome!

Going back to my standard reply to these polls, I'm just happy Jimmy is singing anything!

I hear groans and cheers when it's played, so figured what the heck, what's one more poll??
Whatcha think?
As much as I love Jimmy, I don't think he does this song well. Sorry James!

Not my favorite cover, for sure. The only thing I like about it is when he throws in some local lyrics.
But if Miss Nicki was here, she probably would say she likes it because she loves Bruce and appreciates the tribute.

Thanks for calling me stupid Schooner, this coming from someone whose tagline says that the torch has been passed from Jimmy Buffett to Kenney Chesney really says it all. I really don't see the reason for name calling. Glory Days is about people whose better days of their lives have already passed them by and they sit around and dream about the old days and to me that is depressing. Quit being such a douche.

And this kind of post would be one of the reasons I left this site for months.
Using an internet discussion board to communicate does NOT give you the right to call someone stupid.

I've always loved the song, and I hear it played in Philly... which seems appropriate. I'd hate to lose Southern Cross, but I've always loved JIMMY'S songs!

I like Glory Days and most other Springsteen songs but I would much rather have it dropped from the setlist - along with most of the other covers.
A few covers per show is fine as long as they fit the definition of typical Buffett style music - in my opinion Glory Days does not fit that mold.

Someone please tell me which part of these lyrics are not depressing, because apparently I am stupid and clueless according to the resident music snob. I had never heard the extra verse about his Dad, but it's even more depressing than the rest of the song.

I had a friend was a big baseball player
back in high school
He could throw that speedball by you
Make you look like a fool boy
Saw him the other night at this roadside bar
I was walking in, he was walking out
We went back inside sat down had a few drinks
but all he kept talking about was
Chorus:
Glory days well they'll pass you by
Glory days in the wink of a young girl's eye
Glory days, glory days
Well there's a girl that lives up the block
back in school she could turn all the boy's heads
Sometimes on a Friday I'll stop by
and have a few drinks after she put her kids to bed
Her and her husband Bobby well they split up
I guess it's two years gone by now
We just sit around talking about the old times,
she says when she feels like crying
she starts laughing thinking about
Chorus
My old man worked 20 years on the line
and they let him go
Now everywhere he goes out looking for work
they just tell him that he's too old
I was 9 nine years old and he was working at the
Metuchen Ford plant assembly line
Now he just sits on a stool down at the Legion hall
but I can tell what's on his mind
Glory days yeah goin back
Glory days aw he ain't never had
Glory days, glory days
Now I think I'm going down to the well tonight
and I'm going to drink till I get my fill
And I hope when I get old I don't sit around thinking about it
but I probably will
Yeah, just sitting back trying to recapture
a little of the glory of, well time slips away
and leaves you with nothing mister but
boring stories of glory days
Chorus (repeat twice)

but if you put a reggae beat, and steel pan music in there....
kinda like "Born in the USA".. not exactly the best campaign theme song if your people have actually listened to the lyrics.

Yep, when I listen to my 8/25/05 recording of the philly show, that Glory Days he played that night is by far the best version they have played to date. They were ON that night, and it was the first time they did it live too...

If only you'd have been Ronnie Reagan's Campaign Manager R2 you could have warned him!!
