Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Pinot Noir in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO"

Are nuclear munitions not marked in a special way to keep them separate from conventional ordnance?
If they are, that begs the question: do B-52s routinely fly around this country with nukes mounted on the wings?
Also, the crew who flew the aircraft down to Louisiana apparently didn't know the nukes were on the wings?
But I guess none has been armed and dropped accidentally so far (only 2 on purpose way back when) so I guess we're OK.

Actually I think there are a few other nukes out in the Atlantic somewhere, or there were at one time. I think they were accidently jettisoned off the Georgia coast back in the 60s. The weapons hadn't been armed, so it was just a drop/splash/sink thing.flyboy55 wrote:Are nuclear munitions not marked in a special way to keep them separate from conventional ordnance?

The fact that these airmen were allowed to remove the nukes from storage in the first place tells me that this is fairly normal occurance.flyboy55 wrote:Are nuclear munitions not marked in a special way to keep them separate from conventional ordnance?

I also seem the remember hearing that the Strategic Bomber Command's pilots have to do flights with nukes. Whether it is for training or as part of strategic defense I don't know. Having them in the air would allow for a much more rapid response in case we were attacked by nukes. Not to mention that the ones in the air could be destroyed in a coordinated first strike aimed at destroying our ability to retaliate.

from what I'm finding they never found it - from 1958-1961 3 bombs were lost INSIDE the US and never foundNorthernConch wrote:isnt there still a bomb lost of the coast of georgia? like from the 50's. or did they find it

this site http://www.cdi.org/Issues/NukeAccidents/accidents.htm gives a rather interesting listing of not only missing bombs but also "accidents" that happened

Simi Valley's sodium-cooled reactor "accident" was on The History Channel a couple weeks ago...ph4ever wrote:from what I'm finding they never found it - from 1958-1961 3 bombs were lost INSIDE the US and never foundNorthernConch wrote:isnt there still a bomb lost of the coast of georgia? like from the 50's. or did they find it

they were transporting the missles on purpose, the missles just weren't supposed to have the business end onboard.
for at 20 years the air force had at least 1 squadron of armed B-52s airborne at all times, yup 24/7/365 and multiple squadrons sitting on the ground with their engines running armed and ready to scramble on a moments notice.... i can't imagine the amount of jet fuel used during that time...
mather and castle AF bases in NORCAL were 2 of B-52 bases until they were closed in the 90's.

my guess is that Minot, Grand Forks, Fairchild, and Malmstrom AFBs were others (tho I believe Malmstrom went over to tanker refueling operations in the 80s, but they probably still kept a couple KC-135s ready at all times on the same theory)AlbatrossFlyer wrote:they were transporting the missles on purpose, the missles just weren't supposed to have the business end onboard.
