Do You/Would You Wear Fur?
Earlier this year, an eldery relative passed away. Long story short, her immediate granddaughter did not want her old mink coat since she is opposed to real fur.
Since my relatives know that I like sewing and vintage fashion, they asked me if I wanted it. I took it. This is a coat that has been around for decades and was a sentimental item; it seemed a shame to give it away.
It got me thinking about this issue. I used to work in downtown Chicago where lots of people wear fur. We had several conversations at work about fur and people were very divided. I also used to live in England where fur is vehmenently opposed to it. You never saw people wearing fur there, at least not where I lived although I don't know what it was like in London.
What's your opinion about real fur? Would you wear it? or would it depend upon the type of fur (i.e. if it was farmed or not).

I wouldn't intentionally buy fur I don't think. Hubby got me a new winter coat a few years back that had a coyote fur collar. I probably wouldn't have picked it for myself, but I've kept and worn the coat.
I don't go all PETA on anyone who wears fur, but it's not my first choice in fashion. I do wear leather shoes though, so who knows.

I'm with Mal....it's not my choice, but I've also never lived in a climate where it would even be an option. I wear leather too, so it would be a bit hypocritical for me to condemn someone for choosing to wear fur, even if I don't like it. I do think it is LUDICROUS for anyone to wear it in Cali though...so I figure those that do are trying to make some sort of statement (although they probably don't know what that statement is).
VIG...it's funny that you bring this topic up. I spent the last month trying to downsize my parents' house so we can move them to a smaller place. My Mom has a really nice mink coat that she hasn't worn in 40+ years, but she wore it when she lived in Chicago. We have no idea what to do with it.

let's see, my winter flight jacket is leather with a sheepskin lining and a fur collar and i sit on sheepskin seat covers in my car, leather belts, and shoes.
i guess i don't have a problem with fur....
i find it interesting about the comment that the brits hate fur, but fox hunts are still cool.....

Here's an article about London Fashion Week and anti-fur protesters. I think they were throwing something at Paris Hilton.AlbatrossFlyer wrote:let's see, my winter flight jacket is leather with a sheepskin lining and a fur collar and i sit on sheepskin seat covers in my car, leather belts, and shoes.

My sister in law and I (she lives in England) had this conversation a few weeks ago. She was reminded of the anti fur people who let loose minks from a farm - they got into the wild and created all kinds of problems...
Anyway, lots of people actually are not anti fur there, just are afraid of wearing it then becoming targets for abuse.
Fox hunting has been banned in England, although I'm sure it's still a hot topic. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4726566.stm

I can't afford to go out and buy one, but if I inherited a mink stole or something of that nature, I'd take it. I'd wear if ever the occassion arose. I'd probably wear it along with the diamond ring I inherited from my grandmother...they would both have the same meaning to me.
For those who choose not to for whatever reason, I respect your choice. Please respect mine, if ya know what I mean.
I've got leather all over the place...purses, shoes, saddles, dog collars...and have no problem with it.

I never liked fur, and personaly would'nt wear it.
Then again, I never wear jewelry (except beads at phlockings/tailgates)
My wife inherited two fur coats, and initially I was kind of embarrassed for her to be seen wearing them.
A close friend of mine is a third generation furrier, so I have heard all the arguments for fur.
It still wasn't/isn't my style, so I really am not impressed with a nice coat like some others are.
I hate PITA's tactics.
I have now become PROUD to be seen with my wife in her fur, as I see it as a statement telling PITA to get $crewed.
Pita is against free choice, and interferes with other people's lives.
I have deliberatly walked passed a PITA picket line outside a fancy fur store around Christmas to show others that they should feel free to do the same. I had no interest in being in the store, and was just trying to protect the businessperson's right to a fair shake, and to set a precedent for the potential customers not to be afraid of a terrorist group.
Remember also:
Polyester is a non-renewable resource. It is a petroleum product.
Ranched furs are a 100% renewable resource.
I still would'nt wear fur, but I wouldn't wear any kind of Bling either.
If you like the fur, wear it proudly, you didn't illegally kill any animals to produce it.
Wearing polyester puts money in the pockets of Islamic Fundamentalist terrorists.
Wearing fur tells PITA people that they should just go home and stop wasting their time.
Many of the protesters have been bussed in from other states!
They want to force ALL people to become pure Vegans!
If it's cool for them, fine.
But don't feel intimidated by them and not wear something that you like just because they are so vocal.

Kathy, I'd hold on to it if I were you, but I'm sentimental that way. I have very few family heirloom things from my dad and grandparents....Brown Eyed Girl wrote:I'm with Mal....it's not my choice, but I've also never lived in a climate where it would even be an option. Also, you never know where life leads you. Perhaps some day you'd have occasion to wear it.

Your post reminded of the time last winter when my husband and I were out on the motorcyle...it was cold, so we were dressed in leather head to toe....drove by a PITA protester. Couldn't resist the urge to make a UTurn and go back by him a couple more times and wave. Please note we did not harass, flip him off, or anything of the like. Just made a point. We figured he opened himself up to our reaction by standing in the median strip of a busy road.

One thing PETA has done in the past is throw red paint (symbolic blood) on women wearing fur coats. If they really had the courage of their convictions they'd find some Hell's Angels and throw red paint on their leather jackets.Longboardn' ASEL&S wrote: ... I hate PITA's tactics. ...
