Beach buggy question
I feel really foolish asking this
but I got an older 4 wheel drive vehicle last month for fishing on the beach, it's already to go with permit and safety equipment. The beach opened for the first time today, and I'm going for the first time tonight. So when the 4 wheel drive is engaged can you drive in reverse or will that destroy the transmission
Think what you will
but I'd rather ask you guys then try to explain to the guy at the tranny shop what happened.

You most definitely can drive in reverse. I wouldn't go the entire beach length, but to back up is fine. Remember to lower tire pressure or you will sink up to axles in sand. Get a portable air pump, it makes it easier to inflate when done.
See you on the beach....Stripers are off the surf on LBI !!!

Here's a good site for info..http://www.njbba.org/
Be sure you're not using an aggressive tread tire. You don't want to dig in, you want to stay on top of the sand. Lowering the tire pressure is a must. Depending on the size of the tire & the original pressure, you may have to go as low as 25 psi. Have fun !

25 is NOT low enough. i have been driving the beach up here on the cape for decades. i put ours down to 13. the police say 18-15 is required but 13 is better. it really helps one move around in the really soft sand. i can't tell you how many dumb asses i have personally helped get themselves out beacuse they don't lower the tire pressure enough. by the by,,i have a jeep grand wagoneer. my second one and she does wonderfully over sand.Tropic_Al wrote:Here's a good site for info..http://www.njbba.org/

one last pointer, if you come off the sand and you can't inflate your tires right away make sure you drive slow, be careful of turns in the road. it will take your vehicle much longer to respond to turns and the corrections than normal. i had a friend flip his jeep when going around a corner. of course this was more than 25 years ago, and perhaps he was driving too fast for the tire pressure..and maybe he had had a few beers in him...
dumb a**

Valid point on the pressure but it depends on the vehicle. I have an f350 crew cab w/a lance camper. The tire pressure for the road is 80 psi.MacPhin wrote:25 is NOT low enough. i have been driving the beach up here on the cape for decades. i put ours down to 13. the police say 18-15 is required but 13 is better. it really helps one move around in the really soft sand. i can't tell you how many dumb asses i have personally helped get themselves out beacuse they don't lower the tire pressure enough. by the by,,i have a jeep grand wagoneer. my second one and she does wonderfully over sand.Tropic_Al wrote:Here's a good site for info..http://www.njbba.org/

If i go lower than 25, I'd pop the bead. 13 is correct for a normal vehicle.
Beachbumm, what type of buggy are you driving ?

I'm repeating myself here
must be the new server
I picked up a blazer, it's primary use is for the beach. I went out around 5 this am and caught a few 1-2lb blues, had a great time. thanks for the heads up about the tire pressure, it would never had occurred to me

A Blazer is perfect. Nice & roomy for all the extra gear you're going to get now. Just curious, what tire pressure did you wind up using? I love surf fishing this time of year. Weather is still nice, water is warm & no crowds on the beach. 'cept for the fishermen, of course.thebeachbumm33 wrote:I'm repeating myself heremust be the new server

I dropped the tires from 35psi to 20psi, drove in tracks that were made by others and even had the opportunity to use reverseTropic_Al wrote:A Blazer is perfect. Watch the tire pressure even at 20psi with a Blazer. Greg buried ours at that level down in Ship Bottom on the soft sand. You may want to go even lower especially if it hasn't rained in while and the sand gets super soft. Digging out sucks and getting towed is EXPENSIVE !!! Remember Holgate !!!
Racks on top or in front? If you can, get the removable ones that attach to tow hitches, great for when not using them on beach.
See ya maybe during derby time ! If I can ever get a day off from work I will finally get back on the beach !!!
