Never had the chance to catch them live, although I would love to. Most fo the time when I go see bluegrass bands they are smaller, local area bands as opposed to big names. The one exception (and this was really luck of the draw) was seeing Bill Monroe perform at the Opry. My first trip to Nashville in the summer of '93, we got tickets and he ended up being there. Not many times you can say you saw one of the originators of a genre of music.

And I doubt you would like them. It was a side band that jerry garcia was in.

I'm very much a country radio fan, in that I listen to what's out there but don't delve too deep into specific artists. The biggest execptions to that would be Montgomery gentry, Big n Rich, Brad Paisley. No one else leaps to mind. I tend to be a little more old school, Cash, kristofferson, HW II, Willie, Waylon.

It was 8:45. I've seen a lot of performers on either GMA or the Today Show who did a pretty good job early in the morning. Just didn't like their sound.

Toby - I like his attitude. He has some fun songs, some attitude songs and some meaningful songs. From his Willie collaboaration, Beer for my Horses, to Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue, to Shoulda Been a Cowboy to Nights I Can't Remember, Friends I'll Never Forget, to Maintenance Man, it seems he doesn't take himself too seriously, yet produces good work.

I'll add Kenny Chesney to this as well. So far, while I haven't bought an album, I love Beer in Mexico, like Tequila Loves Me if You Don't, No Shirt, No Shoes and Guitars and Tiki Bars. He's fun.

Gretchen - She's a throwback, with pipes. I love Politically Un-Correct. Anytime you pull Merle out with you, you're OK. I also saw her sing Barracuda with Heart for the Rock Honors show. Wow, that Redneck Woman can sing.

Van Zant - I'll admit, I don't know too much by them, but I'm not into the country bands lately. Big and Rich are a little creepy to me and I never got into the Brooks and Dunn, Montgomery Gentry thing, and Sugarland, well, I saw the videos first and that woman turned me off with a her wierd faces and how she carries herself. She can sing, but, first impression killed it for me. So . . . I love Help Somebody and a few other things I've heard by the Van Zant brothers, so they'd be my best fit for this category. I also like the Charlie Daniels Band, but I don't know of anything new from them for a while.

Thank You for going back and giving the "why" portion.. although, must admit I forgot to do it myself when I first started this thread

It appears we both like Toby for the same reasons.. my co-write/vocal partner didn't care for him too much either when we first starting writing and playin' together because he had only seen his humorous side and wanted to see a little bit more depth out of him so I started introducing him to his albums.. I explained to him that the majority of Toby's catalog is more modern day "outlaw" it didn't take long to convert him over after he not only saw him do a live request/acoustic performance special on CMT but also heard his duet with Merle on the Honkytonk U. album.. Now he can also appreciate his humorous side of music. We both had the pleasure of meeting, listening and sharing some beers with Scotty Emerick (Toby's right hand man, guitar player & principle songwriting partner) in Key West this past May during the songwriters festival.. certainly one of the wittiest hit writers out there today and a great guy with grounded values to boot!

As for Gretchen.. yeah, I respect her for all that she juggles in life as a single mom and recording artist.. I also appreciate the blend of traditional country and modern rock sounds that she brings to the table but still knowing when to bring the music back around to its roots and prove she's authentic as well (as with a lot of the country artist I tend to lean towards)

and ya know.. I did't know what to think about Big N Rich until more recently either.. I was definately on the fence with those guys as a vocal duo.. I knew that John was one hell of a songwriter (Amarillo Sky, Hicktown, Johnny Cash, Come To Bed, Redneck Woman, Why - just to name a few cut by other artist) but wondered why he wouldn't use more of that type of material in his very own duo.. and only recently this Summer did I fall onto their side when I saw a live concert out of them from Fanfest up in Wisconsin.. Honestly, the last half hour of that show blew me away.. I was dumbfounded at what a hell of a performance it was - and as performers thats where they gained my respect. And with my background ,as a "classically trained" musician, I can certainly embrace their philosophy of "music without prejudice"

You mentioned Van Zant.. I must admit that I haven't quite received the exposure that I need to really develop an opinion of them.. all I know is that based on what little I've heard from them I've come to the conclusion that they are some talented writers.. I know my music partner really digs the stuff their doing.

I get the impression you lean more towards the rootsy/traditional or more "outlaw" sound of country.. based on what I can tell of your taste, I would highly recommend you p'up Little Big Towns latest album - they have their very own unique sound and it's not outlawish but if I'm reading you right.. I think you would dig a lot of the stuff their laying down right now..
And if you haven't checked out any of Miranda Lamberts stuff.. think you would appreciate that as well - especially her newest album that came out this Summer! It provides a VERY nice "western/honkytonk" sound!
