Geek technical question??!

And I do mean "geek" in the most positive possible light!

My wireless router and my cable modem haven't been speaking for the last 24 hours.....

The cable modem will speak to my laptop (thus the ability to post), and my computers can talk to the wireless router, but computer>>router>>modem>>internet? no dice.... :-? :-? :-? :-?

I can't get the (circa 2004) Linksys router to accept a firmwear upgrade. It just says upgrade incomplete and sneers at me......

I've reset to factory settings and reconfigured, to no avail. Done the whole unplug, power down, reboot, reset, etc drill.

Thoughts? Opinions?

I don't mind buying a new router if it's dead, but I hate to spend the money only to find out that's not the problem. Any favorite routers out there? Recommendations? I have a PC desktop and a MacBook laptop.

Thanks!

Give it up on that old router!

I've bought probably about 5 routers (for various reasons... including floods) since I got cable access to internet ... And... Was that way back in 2001??

I have a Netgear WGR614 now... think it was only $40 or so... How can you go wrong with that? Has wireless too!

They probably don't sell that one particular router any more... But for $40, ya need to spring for the new version!

Thanks, GBM!

I think whatever WalMart of Staples has on sale tomorrow is what I'll be picking up....

Good choice!

Although Netgear is still on their own, I think...??

Cisco, on the other hand, bought Linksys and I still don't think the right hand is talkin' to the left one!

If you can't upgrade the firmware using the web interface you can do it via ftp.
here is an article that has steps to do this using a variety of os's and routers
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sup ... lp_pg2.htm

if you decide not to try get it to work or it still will not work geeks.com has a net gear router on sale for like $22 they are normally the cheapest i can find

Hey Jen... I used to recommend Linksys but in the past 2 years they have gone downhill. I have replaced 3 wireless ones in that 2 year timeframe. I finally gave up and let my DSL company Bellsouth provide the wireless router and it works great for me.

I recently got a linksys and had troubles getting it to work on my own. I called their technical support many times for various things and they were extremely helpful. I'd try calling them before buying a new router. I'd bet they'll help you for free and they just may be able to help you fix your problem.

Depending on how geeked out you want to get, and depending on the model of your linksys router, you might try Tomato firmware: http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato

But if it won't accept any new firmware at all....

The newer linksys products, I don't know much about, but if you can find a WRT54GL, it's possibly one of the best wireless routers out there. Should only be around 50-60 bucks, maybe cheaper if you hunt around for a deal.

Look past all of the Draft-N stuff. The 802.11n spec hasn't been finalized yet, so there's no telling if it will be future compatible, besides the fact that you'll pay more for the newest tech.
