two year old mauled by dogs
http://www.wsoctv.com/news/14212764/detail.html
“He was big enough to go out by himself. I guess he just wanted to go out and play,' he said."
In what world is a 2 yr-old old enough to go play by himself?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? OMG! Are people really that stupid?
I wasn't allowed outside alone until I was 6 or 7 at least. And we lived on a private street with a large yard and no traffic!!! AND that was with my mom in the kitchen watching me through a window!!!!
Of course, in my neighborhood there's 2, 3, 4 and 5 year olds running around all the time with no adult in sight. One of them is going to get hit by a car and the driver charged. Or abducted. Not right. Just not right.

Re: two year old mauled by dogs
Sadly, yes, some people are. I have something at home that gives suggestions on kids age and if/how long they can be left alone. I don't remember the ages off the top of my head but yeah, 2 is not that age.carey24 wrote:In what world is a 2 yr-old old enough to go play by himself?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? OMG! My 2 boys, 6 and 4, get adult supervision if they are outside in our fenced backyard or in our court out front. While it's mostly for their protection from others, there are the times I need to play referee.
Twenty degrees and the hockey games on...

not having children may make some people think I shouldn't have a say but my opinion is that no "child" should be totally unsupervised at any of the ages listed, not even in a parents own backyard.

My daughter is 3 now and we are usually outside with her. If she is on our deck playing in her sand box we are in the kitchen - a second away and in sight. I wouldn't leave her completely unsupervised until perhaps 6 or 7. We live in a good neighborhood - meaning someones parents is keeping an eye out for all the kids most all the time.
The Parrot Dice Lounge kinda like a mirage. Here today and gone tomorrow. You should stop by and say hello when visiting Chicago on tour.

I think that he was trying to say that he was old enough to somehow get himself outside on his own and since he had the desire and the ability, he went out. God I hope that's what he means.carey24 wrote:“He was big enough to go out by himself. I guess he just wanted to go out and play,' he said."

I don't think I let my daughter play outside (in the front yard) alone until she was about 8. She would play in the back yard (which at the time was fenced) by herself around age 4 or 5 I think.
Our next door neighbor's boy, though (who is the same age as my son) is always runnin' around out front with lacking supervision.
Drives me freakin' nuts.
I don't even let my son, who is 3, play outside in the back unsupervised. There's just too many unknowns. Usually that involes eating bugs or putting rocks in nose, but also includes kid touchers and stuff.
I still get worried when my daughter makes the trek alone around the block to see her friend.
She's 10.

A lot depends upon the maturity, needs, etc. of the individual child.
However, kids generally are very trusting, which to me as a parent can be quite frightening. And there are so many things kids can get into and do that they simply don't consider the consequences of what can happen.
My boys are 6 and 9 and I really only let my oldest play unsupervised in the yard this . If my younger one is out too, I have to be out there or at least watch through the kitchen window if I need to pop into the house to get something.
You just never know. At some point, you need to let them take some responsibility and teach them to be independent. I think you can create various problems by being overprotective by not teaching your kids how to think for themselves. But it's a gradual process that parents have to guage based on their own kids.
At any rate, 2 year olds cannot be left by themselves. Period.

Letting a 2 year old wander off in the woods by himself?? I say let the dogs live and euthanize the adult that was supposed to be watching him (the grandfather I belive). We have a fenced in backyard and my kids play back there, but never without me watching, and they are both older than 2.

I agree with you.
And Larry, too!

This is wild to see this story here. I live in the next county over, only about 15 miles, and my 15 yr old daughter takes gymnastics in the same neighborhood where the child first disappeared. She said they came in the gym looking for him and she was really upset when she heard what happened. I agree with everyone else, I STILL don't let my daughter go outside or do anything without knowing where she is at all time (I guess being a Social Worker has tainted me because I KNOW what's out there and I'm not taking any more chances than I have to). Really sad story but you have to wonder how old the Grandfather is to be watching someone's kids, how many kids was he responsible for, did the mom just dumped the kids on him or whatever. Doesn't excuse bad behavior but there is probably more to the story than reported, but then again there always is.

BOY, ain't that the truth!!!!!
I'm actually glad to see the responses on this.. at times I thought maybe I was too overprotective with my kids. They could play in the back yard alone at about 7 or so, but couldn't go out front alone until later.... and when they got to the point of going to their friends houses, I'd make them call when they got there, and call when they left.
I even heard my youngest daughter(who is almost 19) say on the phone once about a year ago....."yea, I'll go, let me see if my mom will let me out of the backyard"
But.... I DON'T CARE!!!! My kids were going to be safe!!!!
Even now that they are pretty much on their own..... I still worry!!!
oh, and using the stove????????? that was another whole issue!!!!

Re: two year old mauled by dogs
Even if that is what he meant, you can keep a kid from wandering outside, through proper supervision and childproofing your doors. I have a 2-yo and I would never in a million years allow him outside alone. If we are outside together and I have to run in for two seconds to grab something, I make him come with me. And we have doorknob protectors on all he doors that lead outside to keep him from wandering out on his own.FunkHouse9 wrote:I think that he was trying to say that he was old enough to somehow get himself outside on his own and since he had the desire and the ability, he went out. There's just no excuse for something like this. None.

After working in the ER i have been saying for years that people should have to have a license to have kids!

If you watch the video, the actual quote is "he was big enough to open the door by himself." or something like that.
Don't think I've never seen two sadder looking dogs. Somehow they know what they've done or what's in store for them.
People who leave dogs on a chain and spend no time with them cause them to not know how to behave with people.

I gotta add this
First, I am very sorry for the family of the child
BUT
The dogs were CHAINED and had never hurt anybody and they DO NOT deserve to be put down. Most likely the dogs were playing with the child and didn't mean to kill the child.
I know all of us love our animals (dogs or cats) and consider them part of the family. However, they are ANIMALS and will do what animals do, these dogs do not seem like crazed killers.
