Just down Greene St. from Schooner's Wharf and Conch Republic, closer to Duval. And yes, they ship all over the country too.jons211 wrote:We stayed in Key West for five nights during our honeymoon. We hit Sloppy Joe's the first night and after paying $40 for two sandwiches (no fries or chips) and 4 beers, we were deathly afraid that we wouldn't be able to afford the rest of our stay.Needless to say, we went grocery shopping the next morning and brown bagged it for lunch the rest of the time and enjoyed our dinners out on the town. We rented bikes and rode around for days. What a phun way to see the island!!
We took a cruise the next year and made sure that it stopped in the Keys so we could celebrate our one year anniversary there. With such a short time, we made sure to go to the places that we enjoyed the most the year before. Cheeseburger and a couple beers at Margaritaville, pizza and a pitcher at Angelina's, and more beer at other bars but I don't remember their names.
Our last stop before getting back on the boat was a little store called Peppers of Key West. If you like hot sauce, then you CANNOT afford to miss this place. Bring in a pitcher of beer (they have an "understanding" with the bar next door), and sit at their hot sauce bar where they'll let you try all their hundreds of hot sauces for free. Share your beer with them and they'll treat you right! Of course, some of their sauces are really hot hot hot and that just makes you drink drink drink... and that's why this was our last stop before getting back on the boat.

Manly sport, for a manly man.. Can't remember, but think that Hemingway might have also been a fan of the cock fighting tradition on Cayo Hueso tooSMLCHNG wrote:Pfffft!!drunkpirate66 wrote: I am surprised you braved the dangerous pirate filled roads and stepped off Duval Street to hit a Jimmy Buffett covered Hemmingway hangout. One of our greatest thrills on our most recent trip to Key West (July 2007) was that the waitress in Sloppy Joe's recognized us from our visit in 2004, and we remembered her. That Cheers kind of feeling, where everybody knows your name! We'd had a good long talk about how she was one of the many who went to Key West one time and couldn't wait to move there. You can hear those stories everywhere you go!
I would recommend the Conch train despite the price because it will get you nearly everywhere on the island in an hour and a half, with a great overview of its history. You see lots of things you'd never see otherwise, being there for only one day.

so was "ratting" and "bear baiting" in England too, but can't say I'd have been a big fan of either.drunkpirate66 wrote:Did you ask? I can name places and things too . . . but Hemmigway's boxing ring is still down there . . . or was in July which was the last time I was there. Cock fighting - notsomuch; insert joke here.RinglingRingling wrote:so was "ratting" and "bear baiting" in England too, but can't say I'd have been a big fan of either.drunkpirate66 wrote:Did you ask? I'd have to say Blue Heaven is a must visit. The breakfast is great, we wound up going all three days we were in Key West this year. Make sure you bring some Baby's Coffee back with you. It's a regular order for us at home now.
It's touristy, but the Butterfly Conservatory is amazing. It's at the far end of Duval, close to Louie's Backyard and the Southernmost House.
I liked Capt. Tony's (I like old dive bars). We were only there as a pop in to see it and have a beer, but it was cool.
Schooner Wharf is a must. Locals place, gives you a real Key West feel. As mentioned, from here you can look for Shrimpboat.
I wasn't all that impressed with Margaritaville, but I think everyone has to go there at least once. (if you're a Buffett fan, that is)
For me, off the beaten path is better.
Enjoy!

OK, first of all I don't like to flame anybody. I am way to laid back for that. However, you have attacked a very good personal friend of mine.drunkpirate66 wrote:I've met that senile old fu ck numerous times. Nice guy. I believe it's nearly $35 a piece now.
Definitely have a few beers in Captain Tony's.
Personally, I hate stuff like that.
And Captain Tony's is nothing more than a boutique for tourists who like Last Mango in Paris. Not trying to be argumentitive but just for conversation purposes why would anyone want to drop 5.50 for a Bud Light in that dank sh it hole?![]()
Capt. Tony is far from senile. Actually he has one of the most incredible memories of anyone I know. Both he and his wife are very kind people.
The only people I have EVER seen removed from Capt Tony's are over jockeler men with waaay to much testostrone in thier system. Must be the juice talking
A bud light is not $5.50. It is $3.00. Which is a typical price for a beer in any city. Hell, A rum runner is $5.00.
Capt Tony's is one of the few places in KW where you will NOT here random JB and Van Morrison every two minutes. They have some of the best entertainers in town there.
Yes, it is dark and dank. For me that is kind of the appeal. Keeps the stuck up snoby types out. I know it is one of the places I can go and not be bothered. What do you expect the oldest bar in FLA to look like?
It is the type of place where everyone knows your name and it has some of the friendliest bar tenders in town.
Again , sorry if this seems like a flamming. I just wanted to make a few corrections on some comments made through out this thread.
