Well, according to Jimmy in his 10 Questions interview for Time Magazine it looks like that answer would be no, they didn't...

Jerry Garcia and I had always talked about doing a Parrothead-Deadhead show together. Unfortunately, we can't do that now. I love what Jack Johnson does. He believes in what he does, and it works. I know how that feels. I would love to do a big show with Jack.

Of course, if one of them jumped-up on the other's stage for a single song that probably would not count in Jimmy's mind as a "show", so who knows ... maybe they did.

By all accounts, they never performed together. There were discussions of doing a two or three day event where the Dead would perform 1 night and Jimmy would do the next night, with people making guest appearance both nights. According to what I've heard, read and been told, this almost came to pass in either 92 or 93 and was definitely coming together for 1996, however Jerry died in 1995, thus ending that potentially great show.

I couldn't even imagine how great that would have been.

Hello. I couldn't help but comment, I have been playing GD music for years. Over the last 4 years JB has really started influencing me and has worked his way into our set list. So, if you are ever in Dallas come see us, The Gooney Byrds. I'm in Honolulu today waiting to see JB at the shell tomorrow next gig is 10/17 @ the green elephant Dallas. Working on a myspace site... It's funny, a lot of the Dead heads don't care for the Parrot heads and vice versa. Something about drunks and druggies don't mix. I'm trying to change all that , wish me luck!

I don't think it's the Drugs and Drink.. rather a lifestyle thing..
most of the Deadheads I met are not the type to hold down a job
and or pay rent,bills etc.. and that's fine..

most Parrotheads I know are more of the type to hold a job long term
and prefer to knw just where the next meal is comming from..

and then there is the meat issue..

I was a huge deadhead before I ever knew who Jimmy was... It was in the early 90's that with another huge dead head that said, while we were drinking some great wine that I should hear this LP. He put on Changes in Lat on vinyl and we drank all the wine listening to classic old jimmy on vinyl. That is how it all started... Oh as for our jobs... university admin and an IT out source company pres.. Deadheads are still the best! But I have to say my way of life is much more jimmy now, then jerry.

I see no reason why the two can't intermix. Although I was too young to enjoy Jerry's music live, I have been to plenty of other shows with the same scene - Phish, The Dead, Ratdog, String Cheese, Widespread - just to name a few. And I have never felt out of place at either. Oh, and from what I've heard drugs and drink mix well together.

Wasn't there a 2 or 3 day festival somewhere (Buckeye Lake???) where the Grateful Dead played one day and then JB played the end of the festival?

I've googled a bit but haven't found anything to back it up yet. I did find a poster where The Band opened for JB at Buckeye Lake in August 1995. I swear I remember something from way back, and I do know the difference between The Band and The Grateful Dead...

i dont remember the year, it could have been the domino college or fruitcakes tour....but i was at buckeye lake when jimmy was talking about the dead being there the next night...or had been there the night before, cant really remember which one.

on a side-note....i have been listening to the dead channel on sirius lately, mostly whenever radio m'ville plays a song i dont like. i have always liked them, but now that i'm listening to more live stuff....i'm getting hooked

Jimmy mentioned Don Ho early in the evening and spoke about Garcia for one of the encore songs, Scarlet Begonias. If these are two of his music influences that is quite a pair! (Mental Image)
For the most part the shell crowd was not that intoxicated, no drinking in the park that surrounds the venue. Jimmy did mention something about being able to smell the maui crowd> maui waui that is. He told Jake that must be how he knows he's back in the states by the sweet aromas swirling above the crowd. . . Someone mentioned the ability of Parrot heads to keep a steady job and know where the next meal comes from, etc.. That is true for me back in the tour days, but not now. Am I older and wiser, yes, I think. Do I avoid things that might land me in jail, yes. That includes being able to drive home from the show, or spend the night in the parking lot. I think we can all get a long just fine.... Once in awhile you can get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right....

For everyone of those I met, I would meet an equal number of "trustifarians"--Tie dyed t-shirts and $200 jeans pulling up in Daddy's BMW, looking to crash the party.

I just gotta comment on this one. I was a Deadhead long before I discovered Jimmy. I've always held down a steady job, I'm not a vegetarian and I've never been addicted to drugs. (Oh - and no trust fund here, either)

What I loved about the Dead shows was the sense of community. You went to a show and were side by side with other people that got this weird affection you had for this strange band.

A few years back my husband and I finally got around to seeing Jimmy. Always loved his music just never made it to a show. My discovery that evening was of another sense of community. It was awesome to watch all of these crazy people dressed in their wild costumes. The enthusiasm was infectious. And then, toward the end of the show, Jimmy says, "I love it when Parrotheads and Deadheads get together!" and launched into Scarlett Begonias. I don't think anyone in that arena was screaming louder than me.

That did it. I was hooked.

And now I'm gonna see him on Thursday at the Fillmore!!!!!!

It would have been a dream come true to see Jerry and Jimmy on stage together.

I want to say Charlotte. He's told the story a few times in concert, I think at least at the Aspen show in 2005 before playing Scarlet Begonias

I didn't appreciate the Dead until Cowboy Junkies put a song on the Deadicated tribute cd. Hearing artists I knew cover the GD made it easier to step into their musical sea. I love what Jimmy does with the Dead covers and "Scarlet Begonias" was a highlight of the Hawaii show. The fact that I had drunk my weight in rum and the joints being passed all around me gave it a Dead Head atmosphere.

Yes, I like Jimmys arrangement of Scarlet. I've been waiting 5 years to see him play that and followed by Southern Cross made it even sweeter. I'm trying to incorporate One Particular Harbor into a Blue Sky(DBetts) > Franklins Tower jam our band does. We'll see how it goes tonight.... I miss Oahu, albeit I was on vacation and not working. Wife wants to pack up the kids and head on over, she thinks she got a job in haleiwa.
