May is slow season.
You should be able to get a great all inclusive with airfare from Detroit for $1,250 per person.
Go to nwa.com vacations or go look up Apple vacations.
My friend and his wife went for $2,500 in the middle of May. It's hot that time of year and can rain but it is also dirt cheap.

My husband has used USA 3000 airlines to fly to Cancun. Direct flights and he said very new airplanes. They are one of the airlines that runs very cheap- some flights are under 200 roundtrip. Spirit airlines also flies out of there and if you sign up for their emails, they have flights starting at $8. They are also direct. Some of my family has used them without complaints.

I've flown through Detroit to get to Cancun... and about 6 other places (Dallas, Charlotte, Punxatawney) along the way, sometimes! NorthWest does it.
