Larry Craig - SNL Really?

Post by FunkHouse9 »

This is from this past weekend's Saturday Night Live Weekend Update where they're going after Senator Larry Craig. IMO, this is some of the better commentary stuff I've seen come out of SNL in a while.

Maybe it's because in spite of all the work we do, it's the child in us we really value.

I'm not sure just how many "Really!?! with Seth & Amy" segments there
have been, but this one and the first one about Michael Vick are priceless.

Sorry and more sorry for the kids. But that's a funny skit.

That was pretty funny!

I love SNL, but it has been in a slump for a while now and at time is painful to watch. Even Chevy Chase's cameo on Saturday was bad. Clever and edgy humor is what I appreciate about SNL and it's been painfully lacking in recent years. I long for the days of Norm MacDonald doing weekend update.

Wayne, I'm happy to see them writing (what I consider) good material on SNL. My post was meant to share something I thought to be clever and funny and to maybe encourage some SNL discussion like Desdamona's follow-up, not meant to start a pile-on.

I'm more sorry for all the gay folks who have been persecuted over the years by hypocrites like Sen. Craig, just for being who they are. Sen. Craig has consistently voted against measures that would have extended federal hate crimes legislation to cover crimes based on sexual orientation, most recently the Matthew Sheppard Act, which was recently passed (after numerous attempts since Sheppard's murder in 1998) by the Democrat-dominated House and Senate. Bush has indicated he may veto the legislation.

Hypocrisy: the act of condemning or calling for the condemnation of another person when the critic is guilty of the act for which he demands that the accused be condemned.

But I do feel sorry for Sen. Craig and his family, too. After all, gay men stay in the closet because our society still won't fully accept them for who they are. I wonder if Sen. Craig will embrace his apparent 'outing', or follow a path similar to former president of the National Association of Evangelicals Rev. Ted Haggard, who is currently undergoing some kind of Spiritual Rehabilitation?

I feel sorry for the kids, and I feel sorry that they have been trotted out for a dog-and-pony show to defend Sen. Craig.

That said, I have said since he was elected there was something that just set my teeth on edge about him. (no, not his orientation, I could care less about that). I think it was that self-righteous, holier-than-thou, wrapped-in-the-flag air of arrogance he gave off. To see him brought down this way, and desperately pawing, clawing, spinning, and sputtering for a way out... seems appropriate and it couldn't happen to a nicer guy, unless you include Ted Stevens, Jesse Helms, John Tower, or Trent Lott in the mix.

But again, I am sorry that his kids have to go thru the fall-out.
