In the late 60s, 50 percent of kids did this. Today it's about 15 percent....

This was just on Oprah also. I walked a mile each way to school, kids are very pampered today, (I realize we are in a different world today) however juvenile diabetes is on the rise. Kids not getting enough exercise.

I think for most parents, it's a safety issue.

I walked about 3/4 of a mile to grade school.
I walked about 2 blocks to middle school.
I biked about 1 1/4 miles to High School....until I got my license....then I drove out to pick up my friend Dave and drove us both there.

In the school district where I live on LI they only have buses until 3rd grade. From 4th grade on, no matter how far you live from the school (and I realize it's LI, not rural Nebraska so it's not really that far) you're on your own.

My school district had a one mile rule. If you were within one mile of school, no bus.

My district had buses through high school. Even though most juniors had a senior friend that drove and seniors either drove or had a friend.

I moved there a week before school started when I was in 9th grade and I lived 4 blocks from the high school. It wasn't an issue for me.
