OK so I have a great co-worker.
she made us Danish for the trip.
She made my Dad a very nice cherry pie this summer.
(lattice work crust and all)
She has no cloth for the crust she just rolls it out on the counter..
my Grandma always had a well it was a cloth..
maybe a linen towel?
can you buy those? or a mat of somekind?
I want to get it for her as a Christmas gift
before anyone gets any ideas.. she is married and Mormon..just a great person.
thanks..

used to be, Ma taught me how she did it, fruit and custard, but used a wooden pastry board, that was scraped clean, never used water on it...
always used Crisco shortening, never lard (eckk), which I've heard makes the best pie crust.

Never tried a cloth before...I use the counter too...with lots of flour.
Crisco does make a nice, flaky crust.

pie crust is a difficult thing for me so I usually use a pastry cloth, which is what you are talking about. It's possible that somebody who is really good at it wouldn't need one. I use my pastry cloth for alot of things including some kind of cookies.
I will start making apple pies next weekend if it stays cooling off out. Couldn't get into the spirit of it when it was 90 degrees.

Not to interrupt the road from pie to cheese... but
my mom always just used floured waxed paper.
I assume they still make waxed paper, right?

Waxed paper has
two uses?? Who knew??
I thought it was to rub on the bottom of an inner tube to
make it go down the hill faster...
I wondered why Mom kept it in the Kitchen...
no Really Des thanks.. now those of us who make pies (or Quiches) once or twice a year have a great tip..

Well, with no snow (I assume those down-hill tubing trips were on snow, right?)
our second use was at the playground to make the slides faster. Try that with your
kids/grandkids. Just be sure they don't shoot off the end of the slide into next week!

It works well to make clothes hangers slide easily on the rod too.
Do you know if she has marble counters? If not, you may want to buy her a big cutting board sized slab to use.
My ship she has a rudder, but I don’t know where to steer
