Hey pojo,
Our son just e-mailed after returning from his first ROTC weekend.
Not so sure he still loves the military!
New Years at Key West must have been more fun for him!

New Years in KW is a blast. NYC only has Times Square and a shinny ball dropping. Here in KW we have a choice of THREE major events, not just one :)

You can:
1) Watch a pirate wench drop at the Schooner Wharf.
2) Watch a GIANT conch shell drop at Sloppy Joes.
3) Wacth Sushi ( world famous drag queen ) drop in a giant shoe at 801.

Last year Sushi was on with Anderson Cooper.

It is VERY croweded. As far as boobies, noise, and rowdieness go, I would say it is worse then Fantasy Fest. Only it is one night instead of a week. I know Duval St. is a lot more trashed in the morning after then Fantasy Fest. Last year Duval looked like a war zone on early New Years Day.

New Years in KW is positively insane and a great way to bring in the New Year.

Alright, need some help here. Several people really liked the Southernmost Hotel so I wanted to check it out. However, it appears that there are several accomodations that fit that name. Which one did you all stay in and like?

Southernmost Motel in the USA
Southernmost Hotel & Resorts
Southernmost Point and Guest House
Southernmost Beach Oceanfront
Southernmost House Grand Hotel

Never stayed at any of the others, but Southernmost Point Guesthouse is *lovely*!

Years ago we stayed at Southernmost on the Beach. I think back then it was just called the Southernmost Hotel. Looks like somebody has bought several properties and put them all under the "Southermost" banner.

http://www.southernmosthotel.com/

It was nice, right on the water with a short dock. Right on top of little South Beach, but you had a small pool also. Pretty quiet on that end of Duval, 15 or so minute walk down to all the action.

Yes, it's on Elizabeth. I stayed there once in the off season. WONDERFUL place!!
GPHMTA.
I agreed completely....this is where we always stay. We found the Curry Mansion to be a little too "exposed" (they run regular tours through the place) and you could hearing the blaring music from Bull and Whistle until about 5 am. Harbour Inn is amazingly peaceful and secluded and tranquil which is nice after a day and night of doing the town. It's nice to stay somewhere where you can escape.
I am umbilically connected to the temperate zone....

We stayed at the Southernmost Hotel last April and loved it. We had a Pool View room with a private balcony that overlooked the pool. All the other rooms face the parking lot. The rooms and grounds were very clean and the staff were very nice. The "Hotel" has a Tiki Bar at the pool. I don't think the other Southernmosts had a bar. The location is great. Not to far from all the action but far enough away to be quiet. We rented bikes for the week and rode to the bars at night. Its a great way to see Key West. Forget the scooters.
But I've gotta stop wishin, gotta go fishin

An additional plus for the Lighthouse Court (directly acrross from the Hemingway House) is that Kelly McGuire hosts several songwriter showcases in the Courtyard, by the pool. A nice chance to see many of the trop rock artists in a relaxed afternoon atmosphere.

Just what it says. Free beer and wine and snacks for an hour.

So I guess that doesn't include Margaritas or mixed drinks?

Naw it's real basic. I think when I stayed there, maybe we did it half the time. Usually we'd gone out during the day, done whatever, then moseyed back to nap, shower, kinda refresh the batteries for the night, so it was a nice way to relax and gameplan for the night.

I'm down in Key West now and looking through a Promo Book, "SEE KEY WEST". There is a place that lists FREE reservation service for B&B's, Hotels, Condos and Houses. They are called AA Accomommodation Center, Inc.

web address www.accommodationskeywest.com

Haven't used them but they might be of some help.

Places we've stayed:

Southern Cross Motel: Decent, right on Duval, can be a little loud, no private parking, reasonable at least when we were there

Carribbean House: in Bahama Village 1/2 block from Blue Heaven, nice enough not real big rooms, friendly owners, some parking available or street parking, no meters down there, close enough to walk to places

Key West Hostel: came down by myself last year, did the dorm thing, had a bunk in a room with a few other guys, for $35 it was a place to sleep, mainly college kids and foreign travelers, they also have private motel rooms for reasonable rates, kind of rundown but what the heck, down toward the oceanside beach so quite a walk to Mallory Square and the main Duval Hot Spots

We stayed at Douglas House last year for MOTM and are back this year.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Pinot Noir in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO"

not exactly in Key West but on Cudjoe Key (20 miles north) there's Tucker Inn Cottages on the ocean. It's a great laid back place with pool , dock, and boat ramp and they range from $700-900 for the week. but of course then you'd have to rent a car.

Since I started this thread, I'll help you out. We stayed at the Southernmost Hotel on Duval. Room was big, clean and quiet. Southernmost does have several properties all around the corner it sits on. There are three pools you have access to, there's a nice beach across the street. Even though it's at the far end of Duval, it 's only a 10-15 minute walk to the other end of Duval. We rented bikes which made getting around the entire island a whole lot easier and faster.
I would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND the Southernmost if you are looking for something a little more quiet.

I second that!!! Did the same exact trip last year and loved it. I would be doing it again this year but my broter in law rented a house on Sunset Key ( the little island across from Malory Square) for all of April. They offered it to us for a few days. Can't pass that up!
