It's odd...for several years, I *really* liked their dark rum. I wonder if, when they changed the labels and names, they also changed the formula. I liked it much better as "Matecumbe Dark." And it wasn't the same rum as Cruzan dark, amazingly. And how can you beat $10/liter for good-tasting rum?

Of course, now that it's gone downhill, I'll probably just pick up something I like while I'm there, to get me through the week. My everyday rum is Mt. Gay; for special occasions I really like Ron Matusalem 10 and Rhum Barbancourt - just about as good as Anniversario or Westerhall, and almost $10 less per bottle on sale at BevMo. :)

Then again, I want to check out the selection at the Rum Barrel while I'm on the Rock this year. They'll have to wheel me home...

Was introduced to Pyrat by a bartender at the Rum Barrel last year. It is great on the rocks with a cigar. The other one I had there was Ron Lacappa (I think that is how it's spelled) VERY GOOD. No one has mentioned Barbancourt 12 year. Really nice flavor. If i'm mixing with cola, its usually the Captain or the Captain Private Stock.

Get ready to spend an afternoon. Ask if Alan or Tony or Jodi are working. (The rest are fine bartenders but they're the ones I used to work with.) Lay down your credit card, ask for the Rum Bible, and start ordering flights. It's 5 shots of rum at 25% off what they would normally be individually. Let me know if you make it through all 120.

And I'll say it again: Guatemala is making some outstanding inexpensive rum.
Take me for what I am, a star newly emerging.

I have never seen the 12, have only seen 4, 8, and 15. the first one is a good mixer, the second a decent sipper, and if the last is like other rums in that price range, probably pretty good sipped with a cigar. :)

You are correct as usual sir. I just checked my bottle and it is a 15 year. I was also wrong on the Ron LaCappa. It is Ron Zacapa. I only had it last year in when I was in Key West but it was very good.

I got lucky. The State stores here don't sell Barbancourt, the only place I have actually seen it "in its native habitat" is a liquor store shelf in FL. My "I have never seen the 12" was more a "hey, maybe I missed something and have a new thing to try next week" than anything. :) and I am thinking a bottle of 15 is definitely in order if Denny's in Bayside has some.

No offense taken. Just breaking b**ls. The Barancourt is somewhat hard to find here in NJ also. There is 1 local store that does usually have it on a regular basis. I see by others posts that you will be in KW for MOTM next week. Have some rum and a cigar at the Rum Barrel for me!!! I will be there in April. Just booked it last night.

I'm not sure if others states will do this, but in Michigan I can ask a liquor store to order any liquor the state "has on it's list." That is how I got the fine rum that started this thread

Somewhere on Michigan's website is a list of all the liquor the state liquor commission allows. Our local liquor store will order me anything on that list, as long as I'm willing to pay for it :)

I'll need to see what other kinds of rum they have and start taste-testing. I'm not really a connissuer (con-is-sewer???) rather pick up the usuals (capt and bacardi) since it is available at the ole one stop market.

To those of you headed to MOTM, have a grand time. One of these years I'm gonna make it there.
well, ummmmmmm, yah, I guess I better come up with something witty to put in this spot since everyone is reading it.......

Heck...five shots is already two past my limit...:) But if I step outside for ten minutes, I'm sure I can sweat it all off. :pirate: And discounts for a flight of five sounds like the way to go.

Someone bought me a bottle of Pyrat as a gift and I was skeptical at first, but I ended up liking it. It's pretty smooth on the rocks, but also mixes well.

okay, just for the record, the light rum still STINKS. I have pretended that I am in Key West somewhere and lightheartedly ordered a "rum and coke" knowing that it is from the well. AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Am I going to Hell for planning to pour the rest of it down the drain?????? There are so many more fun reasons to end up in "THAT" line, that I don't want to waste it by tossing away liquor...

not for planning it, but in doing it...

are there no homeless guys in your neighbourhood who would appreciate your enabling them? (I am kidding.) Or you could just save it for the next house party, and use it for mixer. Like the next PTA function. :)

good idea on the PTA function :) I haven't been to one yet, but maybe I can leave a concoction in the car for when the meeting is over just to get me home. I don't want to make a bad impression on the "powers that be" :)
