And that is just for San Diego...and more than that is affected. Areas east of 15 are affected as well.

We have lots of other areas affected in SoCal, and lots of friends too.
I don't know the geography that well. Is Carlsbad in that area? That is where hubby's bro + family live.
For those of us who have barely even ever been west of the Mississppi, approximately how big is this area?
I don't even begin to know how to estimate the size square mile wise....population-wise it is huge. And as I said, that isn't a fully accurate map, since areas east of 15 were evacuated much earlier today. There is also at least one big fire to the south.

about the size of the Richmond metropolitan area, with 295 on the eastern boundary and 288 on the west, but probably more densely populated than Richmond.

hi all :) :-?

Taking time to take off the dust mask to check in and say thanks for the well wishes. 8)
It is scary in a way that I guess could only be compared to a hot, smoke-filled tornado.
I drove back from the Buffett Vegas adventure yesterday to some of thje strongest winds I've experienced. Fortunately for myself, my home and many of my friends are not currently in danger.
I can't believe this kind of firestorm could repeat itself only FOUR years later (to the day!)
Glenn is still up in Vegas, and I told him he may as well stay buzzed up there. (SAWX!!)

I'm thinking about coming back for this next Sat's show just to escape this...:o
$#@&...only Vegas again?? Padres ...gotta start believin'!Bring on '14 Spring Training!

That area that is outlined represents a well-populated (and pricey) section of SD North County homes reaching 15-20+ miles inland from the coast
and about 25 miles north/south (400+ sq. miles)
The number of people evacuating will come close to 500,000 by nightfall.

And that's not even counting east of I-15 or any of the LA County evacuations... :-?

in other words, the San Diego county evacuation area (including east of I-15) is slightly larger than the state of Rhode Island..... :-?

Thanks, Jen

y'know, it's early...
but last time, almost ALL my family and PH friends were in the one of these fire's path. :(
There was a lot of scrambling and stress
Pretty different for myself this time... the worst has bypassed us... but I'll pause..
these hot winds are forecast to blow thru Wednesday :-? :(

What is absolutely PATHETIC about this kind of event.
These super-dangerous conditions bring out the sicko ARSONISTS
..and it's as easy to create another disaster here as it is to light a cigarette.. and THAT is what is REALLY scary

A few more good news reports...we'll take them whenever we can get them:

The Lake Arrowhead fire is *finally* getting air support, both skycranes and super scoopers are making as many drops as possible before dark.

Half of a strike team fighting the Santiago Canyon arson fire (Irvine/Lake Forest/Foothill Ranch) was overrun by flames. They deployed their shelters, were able to be doused by a helicopter and all were able to walk out on their own accord. No apparent injuries, Thank God.

WooooooHooooooo!!!! Tanker 910 has arrived in Lake Arrowhead. It's a modified DC-10 capable of dropping 12,000 gallons of Foscheck in 8 seconds. It is unbelievable to see a plane this big flying that low to the ground...and it is a HUGE resource in creating a firebreak. He just laid down his first drop and it was perfect, in spite of the conditions.

Let's hope they can get him down to San Diego tomorrow, or up to the Castaic/Santa Clarita area.

Last word from my cousin was that the fire crews were cutting down trees around his home to try to help save it....creating defensible space. I know they evac'd...but we don't know where to and can't get in touch. :(
