Colbert Is Running . . .
I hope he stays in character (blow hard right wing pundit) and runs as a Republican. Very funny guy.

Wow. Man of the Year sucked. So that must mean Colbert really sucks.CoronaShark wrote:This guy's 15 mins up yet? Sorry but don't think he's nearly as funny as he's made out to be. This "campaign" is like a bad version of the "Man of the Year" movie.
the hit and run is as good as any religion around this time of year . . .

My first thought: There goes Obama's chances of winning (if he was running throughout the country).
My take on it is that since his main age demographic is 18-34, hopefully it will increase voter turnout among young adults (which is the lowest of any age), regardless of whether he actually gets on a ballot.

I saw an interesting piece in the paper about this. I don't watch his show, I don't even know when it's on, but apparently he was talking about his "campaign" on the show last week. If he decides to make it official and actually run, the time he spent talking about it could be considered a campaign contribution, free TV time. I'm not an expert on campaign finance laws but I think it's illegal for corporations to make campaign contributions.
what I really mean . . . I wish you were here

yes that is correct, corp's can't contribute to politcal campaigns, but their PACs can though.LIPH wrote:I saw an interesting piece in the paper about this. the issue on the show was doritos was supposedly sponsoring his campaign and he was using the show's website for campaign activities also a no-no. another issue is his appearance time on tv, it's unclear whether the show would have to grant equal time to the other candidates or not. this issue came up with arnold when he ran for gov, and fred running for prez. alot of tv stations in CA pulled reruns of arnold's old movies in fear they would have to grant equal time and NBC has pulled law and order reruns with fred in them. however TNT won't, claiming the rule doesn't apply to non campaigny TV spots. the FEC hasn't ruled on the subject.
I'd feel bad for you, but I have no soul.....

Comedy Central would like nothing more than to increase
the appearances of presidential candidates on The Daily
Show's "Clusterf@#k to the White House" and the Colbert
Report's "Indecision 2008: Don't F@#k This Up America"
segments. So by entering their own candidate in the race,
they can expand their role as the premier network for
individual appearances by the "real" national candidates.

On the subject of whether to grant equal time, what party do they have to grant equal time to? One would assume Democrats, but what if he stays in character as a conservative pundit and runs as a Republican? Since he appeared on the Daily Show tonight, could Jon Stewart finally get his wish to get Hilary to come on the show (he's had just about every other major Democratic candidate, plus Bill Clinton, but no Hilary)?Desdamona wrote:AlbatrossFlyer wrote:it's unclear whether the show would have to grant equal time to the other candidates or not.![]()

Also, since he said he's only running in South Carolina, do they only have to give equal tv time in SC?

No. They're all actors, but they play politicians in real life.alphabits wrote:You mean all the other candidates AREN'T comedians (or comediennes, as the case may be)?flyboy55 wrote:Uh . . . he is a comedian/satirist.
