Cursive Writing Question for Parents and Teachers

Post by Mr Play »

Mrs. Play is a third grade teacher and wants to compare her district to others around the country.
Please vote in the poll and post your response with info like area and public or private school.

Edit...
Just to clarify we're looking for current info only please. Traditionally it's been 2nd grade at her school and now it's being pushed to 3rd grade. She wants to know how that compares to other schools around the country, and I figured what better resource than BN...

Sorry, Bill. Wish I could remember when I was a kid, and when my son was introduced to it. Too many years ago. But, IMHO, I still think it's VERY important to learn and pass along. :D

I learned in third grade (public), but so far they haven't started teaching Luke this year.
(He's currently in 3rd - public)...so I don't know if they are planning on introducing it this year or not?

I'm thinking of sending him to a Handwriting Clinic to get a good start since his printing is so terrible. :-?

Mrs. Chip teaches 3rd grade, but here in the public school they introduce it in 2nd grade. Then she reviews the letters and they start to put words together in third grade.

since we don't have children I can't answer and since I can't remember when I was introduced to it I can't answer on that basis either.

I can say this, my teacher was horrible at teaching it and to this day I can barely write in cursive.

Cherry Hill starts in 3rd grade. Our daughter is in 2nd grade and trying to "learn it on her own" by just linking all her printed letters together. I keep telling her to learn how to print first, and school will teach her when she is ready.

My oldest was introduced to it last year, 3rd grade, but they don't seem to actually fully use it until 4th grade here.

Victoria knew cursive early-on in 2nd grade, but she taught herself. They teach it in the school curriculum in 3rd grade.

They used to do it in 2nd grade in the last trimester at Victoria's school as well, but it didn't seem the majority of the kids were ready to make the leap from print to cursive so they pushed it to 3rd.

I remember learning it in 3rd, but I also remember doing a lot more writing in my school that Victoria did in hers, at least in the primary grades. Now she's in 5th and they do a ton of writing, which has more to do with the teacher than the curriculum.

Her school is very math and reading focused from K-4 and then it balances out a bit more, although seems like less math this year and a lot more research and writing assignments.

You can blame CSAP for that. Reading/Math is really all the CSAPs are until they hit 5th grade, I think.

She goes to a private school and doesn't take CSAP, only ITBS. We've actually been very happy with the curriculum at her school, just seems like much less writing until the older grades. It also could be because I was VERY much an avid writer at an early age, and Victoria doesn't really have the writing bug. Talking on the other hand...

That said, even though this is the first year with consistent writing assignments, she seems to be doing fine with it.

They also changed math programs this year from Saxon to another program and I'm none to thrilled about it.

Ah. I didn't know that. I figured any school (public/private) took the CSAP. My littlest one is in a private school too, but he's only in kindergarten, so we don't have to worry about standardized tests....

Nope. Only public ones that receive state funding I believe. Although, Victoria's school will get the "Blue Ribbon" this year as part of the no child left (behind), even though they don't receive federal funding either.

We're thinking about transitioning to a public performing arts school next year, but we're very much on the fence. I wasn't impressed at all with the principal at last night's information night. :-?

That's exactly how it's been at her school, up until now.

Nantucket Public Schools are small with a great student to staff ratio . . . 1 of friends teaches Elementary . . . she told me that teaching first graders to write cursive is as tough as anything she has ever tried to do in her life. :D
the hit and run is as good as any religion around this time of year . . .

Mrs. Play's school is subject to the Texas standardized tests, but cursive writing is outside the scope of testing. From what I understand you could get all the way through high school without ever learning it.
