I have had good and bad.... the bad was something I sold though eBay, 9 months later the guy disputed the charge through Paypal claiming he never received the item. Without even contacting me PayPal took the money out of my account then contacted me. Luckily I still have the signature confirmation from the shipping so I was covered. Paypal did work with me and were nice about it but it took about 6 weeks before i got my money back.

The person your paying never sees your CC, debit card or bank account numbers.
As usual, never reply directly from an email for information.
Go to the website directly from a new browser window to avoid phishing emails, and you should be fine.
I've received some phishing emails from paypal (and other company) clones. I've forwarded the emails to paypal and they have been very responsive to them.
I've never had any problems with PayPal, but I do change my password from time to time, just to be safe.

Paypal very good.
Paypal's buyer protection is a PIA. I attempted to use it once. I now just use my CC and do the charge back through my CC if a problem. Paypal gets annoyed and closes my account then. Fortunately, I have a buying and selling ID.
For the most part Paypal is very buyer friendly. I have completed over 1000 transactions through Paypal. One problem. I had a seller that shipped damaged goods. The claim process was long and slow (fair)
If I had complied with their time to respond constraints, I would have been fully refunded. Because I was out of town for a week, the e-mail was received and not read until after the deadline to show proof of delivery back to seller.
