What are we teaching these kids!??
Ok, I have to come and let loose to the only group of people who 'get it'.
I am an elementary education major in progress and in our 'Music for the Elementary Teacher' class we had to do a project integrating music into a subject. Well, I thought what better than a 'Volcano' lesson accompanied by Jimmy and the Reefers.
We really are fortunate..to be a part of such a large yet isolated group. I played the song before the lesson which brought a few smiles, but really NOBODY 'got it'. Barely anyone had heard of Jimmy, nobody but me knew the lyrics, and in personal responses from other peers I had one person write.."Any kid you teach could care less about Jimmy Buffett, or anything about him."
Well that was a royal slap in the face. On top of the matter, my partner had printed off the lyrics and spelled Buffett like it was an endless food bar. Ahem, yeah, Buffet.
It was an exciting day in my life to spread our main man and some paradise to the college classroom, but to everyone else, our man is just another insignifcant bore in their everyday lives.
I could've explained it, but who'd really understand?
Fins up people.

I'll probably pi** some people off, but ...
I could never understand why people get so worked up over insignificant stuff like this? Who cares? There are lots of musicians whose music I don't like, I doubt if any of their fans get upset or lose sleep worrying because I don't like the music. I like Buffett's music, lots of people I know don't. So what? Life goes on.![noeyedear-shrugging [smilie=noeyedear-shrugging.gif]](./images/smilies/noeyedear-shrugging.gif)

Attitude is everything.
Whoever wrote you that note needs an attitude adjustment.
Don't focus on the people who think negative...let them go.
I bet the kids had fun and isn't that what matters?
It'd be great to combine the song with a HISTORY lesson about the Volcano on Montserrat, since that's where the song comes from.

College kids won't relate until you can explain the Buffett mindset and lifestyle. Laid back, searching for adventures and drinking.
i was there once. I didn't get it. I went for the party and then found myself absorbed in the music. It's all how you relate it.
You mention alcohol and they are all going to ask about extra credit.

The Parrot Dice Lounge kinda like a mirage. Here today and gone tomorrow. You should stop by and say hello when visiting Chicago on tour.

ditto that!
buying the box set got some funny looks from my roommates, i'll admit.
but they don't "get" that i all of a sudden had hours upon hours of relaxation and songs that either brought me back to my favorite concert each year or back to the beach.
it's all in the mindset. we just have "gotten it" and it feels damn good!

For every one that doesn't know/like/listen to JB, there are 3 or 4 that think Nickelback is the modern equivalent of Beethoven and think Fall Out Boy should be elected co-presidents of the USA.
It equals out in the end.
It is nice knowing that there are still people out there that keep us Parrotheads in the fringe of musical society. That's where we were born and where we belong.

Like Matt said, the college kids couldn't relate. But had that been an actual lesson for the elementary kids, I'll bet they would have had a blast. I think kids like what they like, as opposed to teens that are worried about what's cool and what everybody else is listening to.
And if you ever do this lesson, try the version of Volcano on the Parakeet cd. Actually, a lot of that cd could be used in a classroom in one way or another.

When I taught middle school (I teach high school now), I would do a lesson with Pirate looks at Forty before we read Treasure Island, and some kids would like it and others wouldn't. I think it is that way with everything you do. Some like some things, some like others. Don't take things personal, especially if you plan to be a teacher.

This reminds me of a day durning my sons 5th grade year when it was pirate day. Their school teams are called the Pirates and his teacher played "Pirate looks at Forty" for the class during pirate day. He came home all excited that his teacher played a Jimmy Buffett song, but I think he was the only one who knew it. Oh well, life goes on. Either way it's now biggie if some don't get it.

I think part of it is that at least with the one comment Finns posted was a put down of his music. Now, I don't know about you, but there are tons of musicians out there I don't care for and probably don't like, but I wouldn't be disrespectful of their musical tastes.LIPH wrote:I'll probably pi** some people off, but ...

That being said, I've taken the approach with people more recently who don't get it that it's their loss and more tickets for me.
Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar

six hours of clapping erasers and breathing in chalk dust should help.Dezdmona wrote:Attitude is everything.
