Buffett/Chesney lyric oddity - has anyone noticed this?

Post by Kasey »

My wife is on a mission to build my appreciation for Kenny Chesney, with only limited success so far.

Anyway, I was listening to a Buffett/Chesney mix this weekend and noticed these lyrics:

Buffett/Mexico
----------------
The sun's so hot
I forgot to go home

Chesney/Outta Here
-----------------------
And the sun's so hot
we'll forget to go home

Pretty weird, huh? I mean, that's not a figure of speech you hear every day.

What do you think, coincidence? Intentional quotation?

Just an FYI, in this case, Chesney "MAY" be copying James Taylor on this (since Mexico was also sung by him first --- I think it may be his own song)
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Since Mexico is a James Taylor song and JT is losing his hair, do you think he's a wannabe too? I mean, Buffett's been bald for a few years already.

Bald schmald.

It's a good tune.

And Chesney's got a chrome dome.

Neither Buffett nor Chesney wrote the respective songs.

Mexico: James Taylor

Outta Here: Josh Leo

So Chesney's copying Buffett by covering songs then?

Not sure, but I don't think Outta Here was a cover, but was written for KC's album...

I don't think it's any big deal for a singer to personalize the lyrics of a song they cover.

Buffett does it all the time.

Mexico Was on JT's 7th Album "Gorilla" which was released in 1975.

Touche.

Ya know he's also covered several Beach Boys songs.
One of them prominently during this years tour.

Actually, they're old friends. Back around '79 when Bubba was recording the "Volcano" LP, "Sweet Baby James" was hanging around with him. Taylor's wife at the time, Carly Simon, admonished him for it: "All you want to do these days is get drunk with Jimmy Buffett!" she reportedly said.
Well, what's wrong with that?! :-?

Back to the thread's premise,

Outta Here is referencing James Taylor's Mexico when the quoted lyrics appear.
The whole verse is:

South of the border there's a place I know
Where James Taylor sang about Mexico
And the sun's so hot we'll forget to go home
Baby we'll be outta here.

So I don't think it's a 'rip off', it's a shout out, to JT and his song.
