Seriously, I probably won't see the movie, but only because I don't go out to see movies in theaters very much anymore. Between the gum-smacking, cud-chewing, incessant talking and generally rude behavior, I just don't enjoy the experience as much as I used to.

One thing I don't understand is why people use the term 'atheist' like they would use terms like 'wife-swapper' or 'pornographer'?

The most compassionate, intelligent, loving and gentle people I know are all atheists.
Me too.

EDIT . . . not so much athesists but those who do not support organized religion . . . evil, evil organizations they are . . . (1 billion dollars in child rape cover ups is quite telling . . . .)
...and without attacking any one faith here,
If your faith is strong and well-programmed (make that "taught"),
should you not be able to watch ANY kind of fictional tale without a fear of some pervasive message shaking your beliefs?

By filtering or censoring forms of entertainment, what difference can you draw between that..
and the kind of intellectual cleansing practiced by Nazi Germany in the '30's???

Isn't this freedom of information the very basis of what we teach our children to cherish as a foundation of what makes America great??

Bolt,

See my previous posts for more detailed answers to you question...but in summary: The original question was, "Will you take your kids...". They have not had a chance to get a firm grip on their faith or religion and as a PARENT there are lots of things I won't expose them to...things I don't agree with or feel is appropriate for them. It's not censorship, it's being a parent.

I'm not saying nobody should see the movie, just that MY kids won't.

just because someone that writes or produces a movie that is an atheist and bases that on their beliefs doesn't mean I will buy into it.

There are all types of religions and cults and morons producing movies, like Michael Moore and Al Gore and I might watch them to see their view but it doesn't mean they'll make me change my mind

The trailers for this movie look good, I will see it when it comes to DVD. We don't go to the theater to view movies, too much hassle and expense.

the Catholic church is just advising people not to see it. When you
offend the Muslims they threaten you with imprisonment, amputation,
death, etc. Then they like to riot and bomb stuff. That's where you get
the "crazy radical" moniker. of course not all Muslims are involved, but
then you have the case of the teacher from England teaching in one of
those oil countries who was threatened with 40 years prison for allowing
her students to name a stuffed bear "Muhammed".
I got an email about the movie and the thing is it is based on a series of
books. The whole story starts out innocently but by the time it ends the
conclusion is that there is no God. That is why the church is concerned
about children watching it. :pirate:

In the same vein 2 of the major charaters in the book (haven't yet seen the movie) are engaged in some terrible things done to children.....

Well, now I've read the book, I see it is definitely against the evils that some organized religiions can get up to... you know, the Spanish Inquisition and all that... It is complicated because the religion in the story is also part of science or vice versa. I am non-religious, myself.

My kids are all adults and some have seen the movie and read (and loved) the books; they want me to see it, too.

The heroism of the main child character, and the loyalty, curiosity and intelligence she shows, make it a very moral tale.

Agreed.
It's amusing to see the banter from folks who haven't read the books pass judgement.

Without going into my own opinions, I'm pretty sure there are a lot of folks out there who see the Catholic Church as controlling and secretive. Image

One of the local school libraries (6th-8th grade) pulled the book from the library shelf.

Turns out the librarian is the wife of a Minister of a local branch of the New Life Church, and she didn't feel the book "upheld community beliefs".

Well, the Superintendent got involved right away, and the book is back on the shelf. The local college also got involved, holding a "Fahrenheit 451 Project" meeting on the subject. The thing that gets me is that the librarian didn't even bother to show up, she sent her husband to speak for her....

That is what bothers me, banning of books for any reason other than, say pornography or something and even that is open to interpretation. I have let my kids pretty much from a certain age decide for themselves and if something violates my values or beliefs I will let them know and talk about it with them, but ultimately they have to decide. Parents should familiarize themselves with what their kids are reading in and out of school so they can discuss it with them. Banning books just make them more attractive in the long run than they would have been I think.
