The Blasphemous Teddy Bear

British primary school teacher Gillian Gibbons has been arrested in Sudan, accused of insulting Islam's Prophet by letting her class of 7-year-olds name a teddy bear Mohammed. :o :o

Me too Jen! At least someone is sensible:One mother, whose seven-year-old son was in Gibbons' class, said her family had not been offended by the name. "Our Prophet Muhammad tells us to be forgiving," she said. "So she should be released. She didn't mean any of this at all."

My guess is that mother will not be heard from, or possibly found, again.

the longer version of the story I read a couple days ago also pointed out that there are several people with the name Muhammed; no one expects them to be the reincarnation of the prophet, nor would anyone connect the bear to the prophet. (I believe the names were selected and voted on by the students).

Yes, I am glad I live somewhere where the 16th century is read about, not lived.

And this is bad because......

And folks think we're nuts! :o

When in Rome...

The teacher should have been familiar with the laws of the country she was in. The punishment really doesn't fit the crime in the UK or US or most of the non-muslim countries, but in a country that lives by muslim law, it does. Ignorance of the law does not excuse the crime...unless you are an illegal alien in the US.

I have serious, serious issues with ANY religion that goes to such extremes over children and a teddy bear!!! For crying out loud they are kids! To them a teddy bear IS a god! Makes perfect sense to me to name him that.

This is why I left organized religion many years ago and refuse to go back.

Still doesn't explain the extremist nature of the religion.......i.e. terrorize any countries with muslims in them b/c the countries don't have muslim practices.

Way to pigeonhole a religion.

It's not the religion its government imposing the religion. It's not as if she was arrested by Muslim authorities. She was arrested by government authorities enforcing extremist Muslim laws.

Nevertheless, can we (and I'm talking more to the media here) keep things in perspective here? Yes this is a horrible law, silly law, stupid law. But she's not being put to death or being sentenced to life in prison or the like. She's getting 15 days in jail and faces deportation. I'm not so sure all of this press attention is warranted.

Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar

I too, thank my lucky stars I live in the good ole usa.

I think this is terrible, she has been in jail for some time and may have to do more time and get 20 lashes....

How awful for her. They claim the kids wanted it named Muhammed after one of the children in the class.

What a shame, and no he does not excuse her ignorance, but she probably never thought it would ever become this. IMHO

She needs some phin power, I'm in line.

She was convicted of a lesser charge, 15 days in jail, and she gets deported after she serves the prison time.

She's already served 5 days, so she's got 10 to go.

The laws of a muslim nation have nothing to do with Nazi Germany. Just because you don't agree with their laws does not mean they shouldn't enforce them.
