I really hate all of the above, but I think the most annoying drivers are those that use cell phones.
For the most part I'll pull over for a tailgater but I'll usually speed up just enough to be able to change lanes safely (ie NOT right in front of a car in the lane to the right of me...)
Although with MY LUCK one of these days I'll see the local trooper as I'm making this move and he'll think I'm speeding

It was a situation where I probably did not use the best judgement in the world. I was on the interstate, and the normal limit here is 70. There is an eight mile stretch that is under construction, and it dips to 55. I was approaching the end of the construction zone and had been careful to only go about 55 . I was in the right hand lane (two lanes on the interstate) when I came up on the officer two cars in front of me. Then, it went to three lanes (They just recently finished installing the 3rd lane as part of the construction). When it goes to three lanes, there was no orange barrels and no workers because they've finished the work there. I should have paid more attention to the signs and realized that we were not yet out of the zone. I travel this stretch of interstate about once or twice per month.Wino you know wrote:I can't speak for anyone other than myself, but I'd be willing to bet any officer who writes a citation to anyone for going less than 10 M.P.H. over the speed limit is having a REALLY slow day.
As it turned to three lanes, the officer moved into the left lane, the car between the officer and me moved into the center, and I stayed in the right. I sped up to 60 and created a little space between the officer and the guy in the middle lane. Even though I thought that we were out of the construction zone, I didn't want to speed up anymore knowing that the officer was back there. I then moved over into the center lane (like driving there the best; don't have to worry about entering/exiting drivers and usually don't get tailgated). I rounded a curve and came up on an 18-wheeler and a pickup truck riding right behind each other. So, I moved into the left lane to pass them. After I passed them, I looked in my rearview mirror to see the officer approaching with the lights blinking.
He told me that we were still in the construction zone--that it ended 1/2 mile farther up the road and that he had watched me pass both him and two other vehicles who were going the speed limit. He wrote me a ticket for going 60 in a 55 MPH zone but said that he would put down that no workers were present, so it would not be the double fine that it usually is in a construction zone.
So, I'll admit that I made two mistakes: One, I should have paid more attention to the signs. And, two I used poor judgement when I past the officer. But, I also think that he used poor judgement: If he would have told me that I was still in the construction zone and that I needed to pay more attention, I would have been just as careful in the future as I will be now. He didn't have to take $152 out of my pocket for going 5 MPH over the limit when no workers were present (thus not endangering the lives of an innocent construction worker) to get his message across. I apologized to him and told him that I did not realize we were still in the zone, but he didn't want to hear it.
I have also never had a ticket in my life--which covers 10 years of driving since I just turned 26. I've been stopped twice. The first time I was stopped was for turning left at an intersection where there is a left arrow crossed out with a red circle (didn't see the sign), but the very nice officer just alerted me that what I did was illegal and to pay more attention. The other time was at 1:30 in the morning in a small town because the local officer said I was weaving a lot. I was a little tired and must have not noticed myself weaving. Once he got up to my car and smelled no alcohol (I had not had a thing to drink), he was ready to let me go. He only stopped me because he was concerned I was drunk. I actually stopped him as he was about to head back to the patrol car and asked what he had really noticed because it concerned me that I was weaving so much that he stopped me. He said, "Oh, it was nothing major; just a few swerves between the red light and here."
I was really hoping that the officer would see that I had no previous tickets when he ran my license (don't know if they have access to that info) and maybe show a little discrection. But, it wasn't to be. I should have used a little better judgement, and I was guilty. But, I think he should have used better judgement too.

Talking about speeding, the oddest situation I have ever seen happened 4 years ago. My wife and myself were coming home from Disney World and had just gotten on I-26 in SC from I-95, these college punks from Penn State in a white Acura decided to make I-26 their personal race track. Flashing folks weaving in and out of lanes, etc. They leave us in the dust and about 5 miles later we pass them pulled over by a SC trooper. A little while later we are near Columbia about to get on I-77 and here come the punks again. Of course they leave us behind and no where in site. Right before we get to the NC/SC line on 77 another SC trooper has these fellows pulled over, twice in the span of 1 hour of driving. We cross over into NC and are now in Charlotte approaching the Panthers football stadium, apparantly these dumb asses did not learn their lesson the first two times because they are up to their same tricks again. We stop at the rest stop for about 20 min, we get back on 77 and would you believe they are pulled over again by now a NC state trooper. I figured 3 times in less than 2 hours they surely will go to jail now.
This is where it gets hilarious. We drive by them and they are yelling at the officer and we flick the punks off because they had no concern for other people's safety so why not let them have it. The officer is done with them and they immediately get back on 77 and open up full throttle again. These kids are not very bright because not even 2 miles after getting pulled over, the same state trooper pulls them over again.
Four times they got pulled over with in a 90 mile span in NC/SC. We never saw those kids again the rest of the way through NC and VA on the way home.
