Country Music fans......Help with your Genre's hits!!
I am pretty much Country Music Illiterate. I'll catch the ocasional "crossover" country hit by Faith Hill over somebody like that but don't know the "country hits" of the past 10 years or so.
I'm looking to download & burn a "Greatest Hits of Country" Cd from 1990 or so. Care to volunteer your top 10!

Re: Country Music fans......Help with your Genre's hits!!
You probably want to avoid the country hits of 1990 onward as the genre has pretty much gone to the dogs with crap like Rascal Flatts and Big & Rich littering the airwaves. However, if you want the real deal I suggest checking out:Dr.Corona wrote:I am pretty much Country Music Illiterate. Loretta Lynn "Van Lear Rose"
Johnny Cash "The Man Comes Around"
Merle Haggard "The Bluegrass Sessions"
Hayes Carll "Little Rock"
Waylon Jennings "Nashville Rebel" box set
Emmylou Harris "Songbird" box set
Ray Wylie Hubbard "Growl"
Brad Paisley - Anything very good country
Shania Twain - not so country. Nice to look at and I wouldn't push her out of bed for eating crackers, but I don't know if you want country look elsewhere.
Carrie underwood - getting good press right now, I don't know if she has staying power. She is riding quite a wave right now.
Alan Jackson - Has some great country. Don't hold the song he did with jimmy against him.

Thanks Tiki-Torches, but it's not for me to be ENLIGHTENED to real country music. It's for the phriends who consider themselves country music lovers of today. Thus, I'm not looking for Hank Thompson or the big country artists of yesteryear that you mentioned!Tiki Torches wrote:You probably want to avoid the country hits of 1990 onward as the genre has pretty much gone to the dogs with crap like Rascal Flatts and Big & Rich littering the airwaves. Re: Country Music fans......Help with your Genre's hits!!
I didn't mention Hank Thompson. The only deceased artist I mentioned was Cash. Everything else listed above is by country artists that are still making music and are fairly current albums. Also, not all of them are "country artists of yesteryear" such as Hayes Carll and Ray Wylie Hubbard (though Ray has been recording since the 70s, he shouldn't be discounted). Those are two but I could name more current performers such as: Gillian Welch, Kelly Willis, Alison Krauss, the Duhks, Mary Gauthier, Carrie Rodriguez, Uncle Earl, Yonder Mountain String Band, Old Crow Medicine Show, the Avett Brothers, Nickel Creek and many, many others. They are much more representative of country music than what you will find on the airwaves today.Dr.Corona wrote:Thanks Tiki-Torches, but it's not for me to be ENLIGHTENED to real country music. I'm a recent Country Music Fan convert by marriage:
If your assembling a variety for friends . . .
Tim McGraw
Toby Kieth
Brooks and Dunn
Shania Twain
Faith Hill
Reba McEntire(?) can still rattle of some
Rascall FLatts
Kenny Chesney
Brad Paisley
Alan Jackson
George Strait
I'm in a boat where I do Cd's like these for parties and put them on shuffle in the stereo. I'll get 2 songs by each of the above and random amongst 5 discs and it works out nicely.

The Parrot Dice Lounge kinda like a mirage. Here today and gone tomorrow. You should stop by and say hello when visiting Chicago on tour.

Without a doubt but Dr. Corona seems to be in search of the more pop/rock oriented country that is so popular today.LIPH wrote:Is Joe Ely considered country?
I have one more to add that may be more in keeping with he/she's looking for:
Dwight Yoakam

Try some Asleep at the Wheel latest "Reinventing the Wheel" ... and top it off with Doug Moreland's newest CD ... not a bad cut in the bunch. Gives you a taste of Western Swing ... Ah ha!
Gentilly ... 42 years is a long time to wait .... a Northeast Texas woman can hope.
