GEED181...I read that about Tortola a couple years back...but I still like to indulge in what Cabbage Key locals claim is "inspiration point" for that "Cheeseburger" song...
Good to hear from someone diggin' holes so close to home. North Captiva is a helluva sandbox. One of the best playgrounds around.
Since we're on the subject of island grub...one of my favorite places on Captiva is
RC Otters:

Well, don't fall off the tip...it's all about balance. Keep Captivatin'.
Now what did I do with my shoes?

Well, I guess I'll add my 2 cents! I think Buffett is quite a brilliant business man. I wish I could capitolize on a trademark like he has. His music has some of the best phrases around. He is an excellent entertainer and knows how to make people forget about life for a while and dream about a tropical paradise. ..So, thanks to Jimmy for continuing to entertain, despite what the jealous say...

I believe that corporations have their place. We all seem to bad mouth them left and right while taking full advantage of the benefits corporate America grants us. We are able to vacation in comfort, to go to key west and stay in reliable hotels and resorts, and become rent-a-pirates for a week. While there are also a whole host of things that corporate America does wrong, it also enables us to do a lot that we forget!
As far as corporatism relates to Jimmy, I don't mind. I was watching the 60 minutes interview that Buffett gave, and what I remember is when he said, someone body is making money off this stuff, I might as well be me. Now that was in reference to tropical shirts, but I see it in a broader context. Jimmy's popularity and the TropRock movement have created a number of commercial opportunities, why shouldn't he benefit? That’s the real question. It’s the one question that those who criticize the corporate side of Jimmy can't answer.

I like Jimmy's albums, with exception to Last Mango, which has about 4 good songs on it. I don't have all of the Tiki live albums. I have a few tour shirts from the 1980s but have not bought any other shirts from Marg - the only thing I've ever bought at Marg was a few records (yeah, CDs are still records) and a book and a post card or two. I haven't bought Hoot or Anquilla yet but plan to someday.
He has written some great songs - a lot of great songs - and he has written some clunkers - a lot of clunkers. I like what I like, I don't like what I don't like. I don't bother convincing anyone of whether or not Jimmy is great/cool/whatever. I don't complain about the cost of shows - I either pay to see him or don't. He can sell whatever, shoes, toilet paper - whatever he comes up with someone somewhere will buy it because it's got his name on it. Everyone is like Nike now.
I like his old albums. I like his new albums. I like the in-between albums. I like the old albums better. But some of his recent albums (I start that era at 1994) are pretty damn good, if not great. Some are OK. His first two albums are interesting - but not 'good'. Better than Mango. Not as good as A1A. Jimmy obviously has phases:
1970s - Writing artist, great albums, great songs, wild, crazy
1980s - Not so wild and crazy, floundering, not so many great songs, gotta do something - my own store...sea planes....some great songs, some clunker albums...
1990s - Jimmy Buffett Inc. Finally some good LPs.
2000s - Hell with it, I'll do whatever I want...#1 LP, more stores, more everything, my own beer - whatever.
It's all fine with me. I don't care what he does. Do it, don't do it - buy it, don't buy it. Listen, don't listen. WHATEVER! Life is just a tire swing.
Somebody's opinion....some of it is on the mark. Regardless, it's what it is.

No decal as of yet...but I heard they're planning to build a branch campus in Whitehouse, Ohio...it's being billed as the MIT of Ohio.
Well, I gotta go, and close my sliding glass door...it's made it down to 50°...talk to you later.

The bottom line is --- I listen to jimmy because he makes be feel happy. His songs take the worries of the day and world away even if just for a few minutes. Best mental health moment there is for me.
