Why would anyone want Sweet Home Alabama as the Florida state song?
M'ville would be cool.

Maybe because Lynryd Skynyrd is (are?) from Jacksonville. That's the only reason I can think of.

The State of Washington years ago came very close to naming "Louie Louie" as it's official state song. Then someone realized we already had a state song a really lame one called "Washington My Home" written by a little old (about 200 years old it seemed) Lady who was still alive. An effort was made to change the legislation to Official State "Rock" song but it died.

Pennsylania was real creative. Our state song is....drum roll please....
Pennsylvania
Written and Composed by
Eddie Khoury and Ronnie Bonner
Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania,
Mighty is your name,
Steeped in glory and tradition,
Object of acclaim,
Where brave men fought the foe of freedom,
Tyranny decried,
'Til the bell of independence filled the countryside.
Chorus
Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania,
May your future be filled with honor everlasting as your history.
Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania,
Blessed by God's own hand,
Birthplace of a mighty nation,
Keystone of the land.
Where first our country's flag unfolded,
Freedom to proclaim,
May the voices of tomorrow glorify your name.
Chorus
Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania,
May your future be filled with honor everlasting as your history.

Currently I think the state song of Florida is "Swannee River" with it's chock full of racial insensitive lyrics. There was a legislator in Florida who was trying to make the new song "I Have Found Me a Home" earlier in the year.

A few years ago a radio station tried to get New Jersey to make Born To Run the state song. Some politician decided a song with the line "it's a death trap, a suicide rap" wouldn't go over well.

My home state of Virginia is in the same boat. It's official state song is likewise chock full of racial insensitive lyrics.Carry Me back to Old Virginny
Written by James Bland
Carry me back to old Virginny,
There's where the cotton and the corn and tatoes grow,
There's where the birds warble sweet in the springtime,
There's where the old darke'ys heart am long'd to go,
There's where I labored so hard for old massa,
Day after day in the field of yellow corn,
No place on earth do I love more sincerely
Than old Virginny, the state where I was born.
CHORUS
Carry me back to old Virginny,
There's where the cotton and the corn and tatoes grow,
There's where the birds warble sweet in the springtime,
There's where this old darkey's heart am long'd to go.
Carry me back to old Virginny,
There let me live 'till I wither and decay,
Long by the old Dismal Swamp have I wandered,
There's where this old darke'ys life will pass away.
Massa and missis have long gone before me,
Soon we will meet on that bright and golden shore,
There we'll be happy and free from all sorrow,
There's where we'll meet and we'll never part no more.
On Jan 28, 1997 the Virginia Senate voted 24 -15 to designate Carry Me Back as state song "emeritus" and directed a study committee to come up with a new state song. As far as I know it is apparently "still in committee" as no new state song has yet been agreed upon.
Carry Me back to Old Virginny was written by an African American minstrel, James Bland, in the last century and has been Virginia's state song since 1940.

"Seminole Wind" or "I have found me a home" would be great but if I had to pick from that poll I'd go with the Miami Vice theme.

The other one is "Where the Columbines Grow", but it wasn't catchy enough, so they picked a John Denver song as runner-up.
Why we even
need a State song is beyond me. It's not like they play it before baseball games or something.
