I was at my favorite used CD/record store today looking in the Steve Earl section and didn't know what to buy. I was hoping someone would share their opinion of what Steve's defining album or albums are? Thanks

His early stuff is definitely good but his career didn't end with Copperhead Road. What have become known as his "post-prison" albums are also well worth seeking out, particularly the all acoustic Train A' Comin' and El Corazon. The latter shows just how adept he is at switching up musical styles as he goes from everything to bluegrass to hard rock while also continuing to excel at his own mixture of country and rock.

I'll second an earlier recommendation in this thread for the Heartworn Highways DVD. It has some great clips of a very young Steve Earle and just some all around great music from Guy, Townes, and all of those guys.

I was looking back through my archives the other day and found a video I took of my son playing The Mercenary Song. It was taken when he first started learning to play and had a cheesy $20 Walmart guitar. He sounds even better now with more experience and an upgrade to a sweet Little Martin LX1E, but I still get a kick out of how into it the kid was at the time and I hope Steve would approve. :D

That is great and I am sure that Steve would approve :D

It seems an odd choice of song for such a young one...but a good one.

Thanks hawaiiboy! He also plays Pirate Looks at 40, LA Freeway, and a whole bunch of other songs that are mature beyond his years but he's always been ahead of his time in musical taste. 8) When he was 3 years old I remember him saying "mommy, can we listen to some B.B. King? " and for a while when he was 5, Baba O'Riley by The Who was his favorite song in the whole world. I figure we must be doing something right when he hears a Justin Beiber or Miley Cyrus song on the radio and says "that's not real music". :D

His tribute to Townes is a good one ... Justin sits in on Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold. It's vintage Townes, but with a Steve twist.

I'm waiting on the new one to arrive at my desk. :-) It's getting pretty good reviews.

Enjoy.

There are some good shows on sugarmegs.org. Go to "S" and scroll down, this site lists artists by first name. I've reconnected with a bunch of music that I had long forgotten!

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate the responses. Hanging around here you can't help but to get exposed to all kinds of music and maybe even more important, the history behind the music. Looking forward to another trip to the music store later this week.
