Islamorada/Key Largo
For those of you who have stayed in Islamorada or Key Largo...please name reasonably priced lodging. Not looking for 5 star but in the $200 range. We are thinking about heading down the day after Easter for 5 or 6 nights. DH and son are big into fishing. I don't think they will do a deep sea charter due to DH seasickness (even with meds) but they would be interested in flats fishing. His big question is "What is there for us to do for 5 days?" and my answer was...NOTHING! I want to relax and not be on the go all the time. Would like to take a day trip to KW and maybe do some snorkeling around wherever we stay. So, if anyone can offer up info to help me swoon him into a Keys trip I would appreciate it!

We stayed here for one night this past June on our honeymoon on the drive down to Key West.
It was just fine and loved the pools.

We stayed here for two nights on our trip from Texas to Key West:

We liked it! Fishing pier and lots of "stuff" to do on the grounds. Property is spread out and roomy, not crowded. Salt water and regular pool. Laundry center came in handy!
Would definitely go back.

We stayed in Key Largo this past Sat day and night after a week in Islamorada at Christmas time.
There's plenty to do in Islamorada.
You can fish from bridges, from docks from piers, and from dead end roads.
You can hang around tackle shops.
You can hang out at Bass Pro right next door to Islamorada Seafood co.
Fish the back country from a skif.
Fish the flats.
Buy a book at "Hooked on Books"
When not doing something fish related, it was fun doing nothing.
Key Largo was different.
You can find tons of things to do, provided they are scuba, snorkel, or glass bottom boat related.
We stayed at the Ramada Inn, which is owned by the same group that owns the Holiday Inn and Marina Del Mar.
All three are at MM 100, and surround the Marina.
All the pools and hot tubs and other facilities are open to guests from any of the three hotels, so you can have fun pool hopping.
It was our first overnight stay in Key Largo, and we loved it. We'll definatly go back there again.
Of the three hotels, Holiday Inn is the priciest, and Marina del Mar the cheapest. Holiday Inn was the nicest and busiest pool, with a big Tiki bar.
Heard the performer at "Coconuts" belt out a real nice slow blues version of Margaritaville after announcing that he would do some Stevie Ray Buffett.

I have checked into the Islander. Waiting for someone in the reservation dept. to come in and then I will call back. For those of you who have stayed there: what kind of room did you have? The only room available for our stay would be a courtyard w/2 doubles. Do you know if the couch pulls out to a bed? Thanks...this places looks like a definate possibility!

I've stayed at the "Hungry Pelican" in Key Largo......Mom & Pop operation, resonably priced with clean sheets and hot water. They have a cabin they called the Capt Quarters that had a full kitchen etc that slept 6 that I split on a dive vacation with 2 other divers. Worked great for us. This isn't a resort, but close to everything.
I also stayed at the Holiday Inn in Marathon, and that was nice too. If you want a good meal in Marathon, try CABOTS. It's on the water, great food, great bands, great sunsets and great drinks!

We had a king room. I don't remember a couch in our room. Oh yeah, there is a very nice screened in porch area.hemispheredancer05 wrote:I have checked into the Islander. The beach area is elevated from the water. You take some steps down to go swimming in the ocean so it is not a "traditional" beach area. They had a "path" that was cleared of coral, etc., that took you out to deeper water with sand bottom. Hope this helps! Wish I was going back. I uploades some pictures for you:

You can check out the dog friendly White Gate Court.
www.whitegatecourt.com
I stayed there a year ago. This is a nice waterfront
compound of 1940s era Keys cottages. I liked it
because I travel with my St. Bernard, but even if
you don't have pets with you I found the cottages
nice and affordable.

You know, I was about to post something about Islamorada and Key Largo because I was thinking of doing the same thing as you and was going to ask the same thing. Want to do a mini phlocking?
Oh BTW, if you're in Key Largo, you have to visit Alabama Jacks.

If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
Life is short, live long!!
I'd rather be a wiseass than a dumbass.
