Question about a song

Post by RinglingRingling »

I have always thought "Livingston Saturday Night" was about your average bar in Livingston, MT. A thought reinforced because the better version came out on the Rancho Deluxe soundtrack (if I remember right), and with that being shot up south of Livingston...

Recently, a friend told me it was about a Saturday night at Livingston College down in Mississippi and has nothing to do with MT. They cited it being mentioned in "A Pirate Looks at 50", but I have been unable to find it.

Anyone know the page, or if this is a "semi-true story" that could be both MT and MS?

I'm not the wisest reference for this type of thing, but I mean well [smilie=battingeyes.gif] and I never heard anything about the "college" version of that story.

In the song database in "Jimmy's Notes" it says:
I think it has a lot to do with what I learned that summer in Montana.

I would think the one about the bar in MT is correct and I would go with that one. This is the first I have heard of the Mississippi connection and not sure if that is correct.
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Life is short, live long!!

I'd rather be a wiseass than a dumbass.

well, first: I was wrong about the state, it's AL not MS. Livingston College, then Livingston University, now Univ. of West Alabama... and supposedly, it was written when Jimmy was in CO with a cowriter from AL who had gone there. that is what I was told..

I have to say that I was skeptical, especially when the "it was in the APLA50" and I might have remembered that. I looked at the book a bit, but didn't see much about anything other than surfing, to NO and touring, and then the trip to KW with Murph and JJW. But, I was hoping someone here had a more encyclopedic knowledge. Granted... arguing over this is pointless, but it would be nice to be able to smile and know, "yeah, I was right, but I'll let you keep your illusion" :)

I was in Livingston this summer and it is about Montana. I talked to an old local who remembered when they filmed there, and pointed out the place. I went there and it is now an old chinese restaurant.
I kept thinking "Rivingston Saturday Night"...

Also called RM and Steve played my request (told him where we were about to pull into, and it was Saturday about 8 ish so...) and song just as we were pulling into town. Pretty cool.

nothing to do with original topic, but....I just bought a house on a Livingston Lane. whoo-hoo! The Mrs. doesn't appreciate the true beauty of that.

Now if I can only get a house on Caroline St...I'll be set!

yep, they have a ranch up the Crazies where McGuane and his wife (Jimmy's other sister) raise horses.

The same inspiration Lone Palm was written about - SOMETHING. What or where it was exactly isn't important.

Exactly. I always thought it was about Montana because of "Rancho Deluxe" and the McGuane connection and so forth. The film reflects a lot of the action described in the song, as well.

I always preferred the RD version to the SOASOAS version, mainly because of the line "There's a whorehouse on the edge of town where anybody's able to screw."
