Use of ADD drugs soars in MLB as amphetamines are banned

By RONALD BLUM, AP Baseball Writer
January 16, 2008

NEW YORK (AP) -- ADD is soaring faster in the major leagues than ERAs, according to statistics cited at Tuesday's congressional hearing on doping in baseball.

In 2006, there were 35 so-called "Therapeutic Use Exemptions" for drugs, of Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder which 28 were for Attention Deficit , according to data provided to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee by Major League Baseball and the players' association. In 2007, the exemptions skyrocketed to 111, of which 103 were for ADD and ADHD.

I can't help but wonder... Baseball is in the process of trying to get steroids and HGH out of game now. I'm sure greenies won't be far behind until they are considered to be in the same class as HGH and roids. So now ADD medications are the next thing. Is there always going to be some new form of medication that players will use get an edge? If so, I think it's not so much that there is a problem, but rather how and how fast MLB responds to it.

Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar

For Red Sox fans who occasionally listen to them on the radio, good news. Glenn Geffner is leaving to join the Marlins radio play by play team. He was just a bad bad play by play caller.

I guess A-Rod and Pujols are over-the-hill?

I know Pujols was hurt last year and could slip.

As for Braun, I took a flyer on him last year when he came up (essentially because CaptP was raving about him). He quickly took over the starting job from Ryan Zimmerman on my team and was a big reason (aside from having Josh Beckett) that I vaulted from 10th place when I picked him up to finishing in 3rd. As long as he avoids the sophomore slump, he's going to put up great fantasy numbers. Where has he been going in the drafts you've seen. For fantasy 3Bs, I'd put him behind A-Rod, Miguel Cabrera, David Wright (for now), and possibly Aramis Ramirez. I know he's not winning any gold gloves at 3B anytime soon. Is there any chance he moves over to 1B down the line (I think Pujols did the same when he first came up)?

And yeah, Hanley Ramirez is a fantasy beast. How many guys give you power, speed and average? Soriano, Rollins, and A-Rod (to an extent)?

Oh god NO on A Rod and Pujols . . . but in a 5X5 with Ramirez you get the best mixture of stats . . . that .330 average really puts him over with the 50 steals, 130 runs, 25 - 35 homer potential . . . the rbi totalmight hurt him . . .but those steals and average! Man! I think this is HIS year to go number 1!

A Rod and Pujols right behind him . . .

(and Braun will give you numbers . . . but I bet in a full season next year he does NOT put up the homers and steals he got you last year . . . )
the hit and run is as good as any religion around this time of year . . .

Happy 90th birthday today to Ernie Harwell!

Some Fun Facts about Ernie:

-- served four years with the Marines
-- married for 67 years
-- saw the Tigers play the Cubs at Wrigley Field in the 1935 World Series
-- was the national TV announcer for Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard Round the World", but only Russ Hodges' radio call was preserved.
-- missed 2 games for personal reasons in 55 years (42 in Detroit)
-- In 1948, only announcer ever traded for a player (Cliff Dapper)

He was here for a game last year when the West Michigan Whitecaps (Tigers Class A affiliate) were in town to play the Cedar Rapids Kernels.
I wasn't able to be at that game, but was told by several people that he was as nice and congenial as anyone in the business. He stayed long after the game was over to sign autographs and pose for pictures for anyone who wanted them.
The man is a living museum, and I'm really sorry I didn't have the opportunity to meet him.

Happy birthday, Mr. Harwell, and many MANY more.
