I prefer the old days when the anthem wasn't a performance piece, but the singer actually led everybody in singing it.chippewa wrote:I'm not a fan of making the anthem "your own" either...but I do like this version:SMLCHNG wrote:Backstreet Boys:
Beautiful voices, nice harmony.
But sing the damn National Anthem the way it should be sung!!!![]()
Some World Series Anthem trivia --
Prior to the '68 W.S., the Tigers asked Ernie Harwell (he's also a pretty good songwriter) to find an anthem singers for the games in Detroit. For Game 5 he chose an up-and-coming Latino star, Jose Feliciano. Jose and his guide dog headed out to the field and did a heartfelt rendition of the anthem that wouldn't even raise an eyebrow today. But it caused quite the furor in the late 60s, and Harwell feared he would be fired amid the controversy.
"He wanted to sing an anthem of gratitude to a country that had given him a chance; who had allowed a blind kid with a dream reach far above his limitations, far beyond the expected to a place few at his young age, had achieved. He wanted to sing an anthem of praise to a country that had given a better life to him and his family."
This link tells the story much better than I did -- Jose's thoughts from his website: http://www.josefeliciano.com/anthem.html
Jose's version: http://www.josefeliciano.com/downloads/ ... banner.mp3
I think I'm probably the only person left who actually sings along with the National Anthem.

I actually once heard John Madden say, "You win games by scoring more points than the other team". Really! Thanks for that brilliant insight, John.jonesbeach10 wrote:And as for McCarver, why is so hard to find good color commentators? Across all sports, it seems like all the high profile color commentators s*ck: Tony Kornheiser on MNF, McCarver, Joe Morgan, Bill Walton before ABC got the rights to NBA games, even the Yankees radio color commentator Suzyn Waldman is horrible. (Insert Troy Aikman: "You're exactly right, Steven") I don't even think Madden is as good as he used to be.
Madden used to be great. Now I just kind of feel embarrassed for him.
Buck and McCarver are both terrible.
I'd much rather hear Harry and Larry, even though Harry's lost a few steps. I'd rather hear a bad Harry Kalas than a great Joe Buck.
Even Scott Franzke, who's being bred to take Harry's place, would be better.
I remember when Keith Jackson used to do baseball. Go and find him.

It is either Las Vegas, NV or Austin, TX; I believe.
On the flip side, what is the smallest US city that has a major league sports franchise (MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL)? Green Bay?
I didn't watch the game last night but did I read that correct, the Backstreet Bays sang the national anthem? Is this the same boy band from the 1990's? I they really still around?

Nah, I used to work with this girl that was totally obessed with them. I mean we are talking borderline stalking. She paid $1500 for front row seats somewhere in Wisconsin. Then she felt that Kevin "Connected" with her on some level. It was beyond entertaining.Lightning Bolt wrote:????Frank4 wrote: BSB how the mighty fell. They should be working at the Speedway across from my house. Saying "2-1 special on Newports this week"
I missed the game last night. How was the beginning with Obama and McCain?

IN order for it to be a balk, his right leg would have to have been moving toward home plate. It wasn't. It was moving toward the first base line, which is allowed.Lightning Bolt wrote:????Frank4 wrote: BSB how the mighty fell. Once upon a time big arena band, now playing clubs.![]()
