The immediate impact of the move is that nobody in Seattle will be calling into Sports Talk radio to complain, because nobody knows how to pronounce Zduriencik or Wakamatsu...
Scary thing is I am trying to sound out the GM's name right now :D :D

Mussina announces his retirement

NEW YORK -- Mike Mussina hinted for months that he might be pitching through a big league schedule for the final time, speaking openly about how nice it might be to spend his days at home in Pennsylvania with 20 wins in his back pocket.

Complete Announcement

Maybe return in April or June, good luck Chase [smilie=battingeyes.gif]

He's got my vote for the hall of fame. He had it before he pitched for the Yankees. Class act

..at least he won't be platooned
I have a feeling getting Ramon Martinez is setting up another trade for a catcher!!!....but not a bad trade!!!...listening to WEEI out of Boston...Coco's value wasn't that high!!...but they did get a quality reliever for him!!
Not sure they're going to move Ramon Ramírez because they think he's going to be a great set up man for Papelbon, and allow them to move Masterson back into a starter. I think Theo saying he's interested in Burnett is just to cause the Yankees to overspend on him and Sabathia and allow the Sox to get the man they really want, D-Lowe. Will they use Wakefield out of the pen? If they get D-Lowe, they'll have Beckett, Lester Dice-K, Masterson and Lowe, they'd have to, wouldn't they?

Don't think so about Wakefield. I think they have another knuckler in the minors and if they bring him up. Two knucklers as starters? I think that would drive the opposition line up crazy, especially if they have a fast thrower in between.

Interesting question for the Red Sox Nation out there at BN....

I live in Chicago, not only am I a lifelong Cub fan, I am also I life long Red Sox fan (thanks to my Grandfather). My question is this....with two World Series in the past four years. Do the Red Sox still have the same mystique behind them or have the taken over the role the Yankees used to play (that everyone hates you because you win all the time).

Just wondering....

Kudos to Moose on calling it quits while he was still on top of his game, and not after ]one with a 7-14 record and 6.23 ERA. There are not many better ways to go out. The guy was a consummate professional, and always fun to root on.

And I think he is deserving of the HOF. The one thing that eluded him was a World Series ring, but it wasn't for lack of trying on his end. In the 2001 ALDS, the Yankees were down 2-0 to the A's going into Game 3 in Oakland. Game 3 was more remembered for the "Flip" made by Jeter to nab Jeremy Giambi, but few remember Mussina pitched a 1-0 shutout to keep the Yankees season alive. He would have had that ring if Rivera could have held the lead in Game 7.

And in 2003, most remember Game 7 of the ALCS as "The Aaron Boone Game" or "The Grady Little Game." But Mussina came into the game replacing an ineffective Roger Clemens, immediate induced a double play to end a 1st and 3rd threat, and held the Red Sox at bay over the next 3 innings until the Yankees could claw back in that game. He also won his World Series start that year in Game 3, holding the Marlins to one run over 7+ innings.

Yes to both parts. There has certainly been a rise in the anti-red sox sentiment, due in no small part because of the behavior and attitude of many sox fans, but there is still something that, at least as a sox fan, I feel everytime I see fenway park.

So you think Wakefield gets the 5th spot in the rotation and Masterson stays in the pen unless there is an injury? Makes sense.
I've also heard that the Sox are expecting to either pay Veritek close to what he's been getting, or they'll go in another direction and go after Benji Mollina, and hopefully get one of the 3 young catchers from the Rangers..

I read at SI.com were Boras wanted a contract something like Jorge Pasada got last season for Varitek. I hope the Red Sox keep him for another year and get one of those catchers from Texas who are supposed to be pretty good.

Yeah, that's what Boras thinks he can get, but he'll have to go elsewhere for it. Veritek isn't Posada, as Posada can still hit fastballs and curves. Veritek can't hit anything faster than a changeup. I love the guy, but he isn't wrth Posada money, and I can't see giving him more than 2 years. Rumor is the Sox are willing to part with minor league pitching, or perhaps even Manny Delcarmen to get Saltimachia or Teagarden. Saltimacchia has expressed interest in a trade saying he'd love to play in Boston with 'tek, or as the fulltime catcher.

The Red Sox don't win all the time. They didn't win this year. Nobody remembers who won this year but we know it wasn't the Red Sox, the Cubs or the Skankees.

you can't have Wakefield come out of the pen!!...say they sign Varitek and Cash....everytime you put him in...you will have to switch catchers.....leave him as your 5th starter...it will be a day to rest your starting catcher...and he chews up innings.....also look around the league....how many teams would love to have a wakefield type as there 5th starter!!...on top of it he'll get you 10-12 wins!!!....if you don't use him as a starter..cut ties with him!!!

Who's the other guy who's a knuckler? I have to go on the site to check.
