..at least he won't be platooned
I have a feeling getting Ramon Martinez is setting up another trade for a catcher!!!....but not a bad trade!!!...listening to WEEI out of Boston...Coco's value wasn't that high!!...but they did get a quality reliever for him!!
Not sure they're going to move Ramon Ramírez because they think he's going to be a great set up man for Papelbon, and allow them to move Masterson back into a starter. I think Theo saying he's interested in Burnett is just to cause the Yankees to overspend on him and Sabathia and allow the Fox to get the man they really want, D-Lowe. Will they use Wakefield out of the pen? If they get D-Lowe, they'll have Beckett, Lester Dice-K, Masterson and Lowe, they'd have to, wouldn't they?
Don't think so about Wakefield. I think they have another knuckler in the minors and if they bring him up. Two knuckles as starters? I think that would drive the opposition line up crazy, especially if they have a fast thrower in between.
you can't have Wakefield come out of the pen!!...say they sign Varitek and Cash....everytime you put him in...you will have to switch catchers.....leave him as your 5th starter...it will be a day to rest your starting catcher...and he chews up innings.....also look around the league....how many teams would love to have a wakefield type as there 5th starter!!...on top of it he'll get you 10-12 wins!!!....if you don't use him as a starter..cut ties with him!!!
I tend to agree with you....but what if they trade for Saltimacchia, Teagarden or sign Mollina...perhaps one of them can catch a knuckler and could be used with any pitcher.
Personally, unless 'Tek goes against his agents wishes and signs for about what he got last year, I don't see the Sox resigning him....especially if he demands more than 2 years.

That would require given up a Masterson..or Rameriz who they just got....Texas wants young pitching....plus you would have to throw in Buchholz or Bowden!!!...so Wakefield would be your 5th starter !!!

Now, I'm not as picky as the damn sportswriters who get to vote on these things, so my ballots would look like this:

1) Blyleven, Rice, Henderson, Raines, McGwire, Morris, Dawson
2) Hodges, Santo
3) Mays, White

3) Mays

Someone needs to start the campaign to get Buck O'Neil in the hall of fame. Because it's a travesty he is not in there. :x

This is Rice's last chance. If he doesn't get in, he has to wait for the Veteren's Committee. And they rarely put ANYONE in.

I just can't vote for him. He really only had 6 good seasons in the Majors, 1984-1989. The rest of his career numbers are pretty weak...average of 9 HRs and a .286 BA. Granted, his glove helps, but I don't think he's HOF worthy.

If Dale Murphy isn't in, Mattingly shouldn't be (and I don't vote for Murphy either). I'll give Mattingly the obvious edge in batting average, but Murphy got on base in other ways. They have nearly identical OBP and OPS numbers, but Murphy was a top player for longer.

From the Pre-1943 ballot, Joe Gordon was elected to the Hall Of Fame, with Allie Reynolds falling ONE vote short.

Nobody was elected from the post-1943 ballot, with Santo coming closest to the neccessary 75%, but falling short at 61%.

Actually, I would like to change my vote from Mattingly to Andre Dawson. "The Hawk" had a much better career than either Murphy or Mattingly. If his bad knees wouldn't have slowed him down, his career .279 438 HR 1591 RBIs would have been considerably higher.

But while Mattingly's career numbers 222 HR -1099 RBI over 14 seasons don't match Murphy's power numbers over 18 seasons, Murphy really only had 6 stellar seasons also, 82-87, when I think he might have only missed a couple of games. The rest of his career was really so-so. I admit, I really admired the way he played the game though. Saw him play those 2 years he played for the Phillies, and he was a "true professional". He was truly one of the "good guys"

Watching Greg Maddux in his press conference yesterday it hit me that we may never see as accomplished a pitcher again in our lifetime. He pitched with skill and guile that few ever has before him and in a time of drug enhanced stats Maddux did it the old fashioned way. He worked hard, studied his opponents and never once showed up his opponent. A class act in any uniform. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity watch him pitch every five days in San Diego for the year and a half he was here. I got to see win number 350 and still have the ticket stub. Thanks for being a class act Greg

Very well said. Now that Rocket Roger has been tied to drugs and all of that. Is Greg the most dominant pitcher of his era?

And yes, he was classy in San Diego :D
