Phin Power for Maquoketa, IA

Post by Patriotic Phlocker »

I woke up today to find out that half of a city block has burnt down in my home town and the rest of the block is threatened. Several small businesses have been burnt and it could take more. The fire has been burning for over seven hours and has erased half of the cities retail business stores. Phin power to all those affected!!!

My exhusband lives in Maquoketa. How did you find out about this? He's on the road and doesn't know anything about it. Do you have any more details?

Prayers and PHIN POWER headed out. :(

Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar

I was just near there with a basketball game this morning and did not know. Several of the merchants involved have been my Dex Yellow Page or Clinton Herald customers over the years

MAQUOKETA - As many as five businesses in downtown Maquoketa are now gone, and four families living in the apartments above are now homeless. Firefighters from nearly 20 departments battled the blaze early Saturday morning that stretched nearly a half block.

A thick plume of smoke visible from miles away drew dozens to downtown Maquoketa. An early morning fire gutted an entire city block. A once historic setting is now burned beyond recognition.

Curious onlookers mixed with those who needed proof of this disaster. Kathy Appelhans stopped into the home furnishings store just yesterday.

"I couldn't believe in less than 24 hours, their business and part of their livelihood is gone," says Appelhans.

She and her father came to check on her nephew, a firefighter from Bellevue. Every department in Jackson County showed up, along with several others from outside the area, even as far away as Illinois.

Temperatures dropped to ten below zero causing plenty of problems for firefighters and their equipment. The water used to douse the flames quickly turned into icicles.

Firefighters used up the town's water supply, and soon had to truck in water from the Maquoketa River.

Two firefighters were taken to the hospital for injuries. The state fire marshall was on scene Saturday morning. No word yet on a cause.

The fire is out and they fought it for over 30+ hours. They still were fighting hot spots as late as last night at nine o'clock. Three of the building are gone as in no longer standing and one is unsure if it will be saved. Reportedly over thirty fire stations and 100 trucks responded to the fire from as far away as Davenport and Fulton, IL.

A special tanks to all the firemen and volunteers that helped with this tragedy.

Wow, prayers to all of those business owners and residents impacted by this terrible fire......may your lives recover quickly.

It's also times like this that I realize how often I take our police and emergency workers, both professionals and volunteers, for granted. That's so wrong. Where would all of us be without the sacrifices that these people make every day????

So here's a little Phin Power Prayer to those brave men and women around our planet as well..... [smilie=coolup.gif]
